Rome - Castel Sant'Angelo
The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as the Castel Sant'Angelo (English: Castle of the Holy Angel), is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. The Castel was once the tallest building in Rome.
The tomb of the Roman emperor Hadrian, also called Hadrian's mole was erected on the right bank of the Tiber, between 130 AD and 139 AD. Originally the mausoleum was a decorated cylinder, with a garden top and golden quadriga. Hadrian's ashes were placed here a year after his death in Baiae in 138 AD, together with those of his wife Sabina, and his first adopted son, Lucius Aelius, who also died in 138 AD. Following this, the remains of succeeding emperors were also placed here, the last recorded deposition being Caracalla in 217 AD. The urns containing these ashes were probably placed in what is now known as the Treasury room deep within the building. Hadrian also built the Pons Aelius facing straight onto the mausoleum – it still provides a scenic approach from the center of Rome and the right bank of the Tiber, and is renowned for the Baroque additions of statues of angels holding aloft elements of the Passion of Christ.
Much of the tomb contents and decorations have been lost since the building's conversion to a military fortress in 401 and its subsequent inclusion in the Aurelian Walls by Flavius Augustus Honorius. The urns and ashes were scattered by Visigoth looters during Alaric's sacking of Rome in 410, and the original decorative bronze and stone statuary were thrown down upon the attacking Goths when they besieged Rome in 537, as recounted by Procopius. An unusual survivor, however, is the capstone of a funerary urn (probably that of Hadrian), which made its way to Saint Peter's Basilica and was incorporated into a massive Renaissance baptistery. The use of spolia from the tomb in the post-Roman period was noted in the 16th century — Giorgio Vasari writes:
...in order to build churches for the use of the Christians, not only were the most honoured temples of the idols [pagan Roman gods] destroyed, but in order to ennoble and decorate Saint Peter's with more ornaments than it then possessed, they took away the stone columns from the tomb of Hadrian, now the castle of Sant'Angelo, as well as many other things which we now see in ruins.
Legend holds that the Archangel Michael appeared atop the mausoleum, sheathing his sword as a sign of the end of the plague of 590, thus lending the castle its present name. A less charitable yet more apt elaboration of the legend, given the militant disposition of this archangel, was heard by the 15th century traveler, who saw an angel statue on the castle roof. He recounts that during a prolonged season of the plague, Pope Gregory I heard that the populace, even Christians, had begun revering a pagan idol at the church of Santa Agata in Suburra. A vision urged the Pope to lead a procession to the church. Upon arriving, the idol miraculously fell apart with a clap of thunder. Returning to St Peter's by the Aelian Bridge, the Pope had another vision of an angel atop the castle, wiping the blood from his sword on his mantle, and then sheathing it. While the Pope interpreted this as a sign that God was appeased, this did not detract Gregory from destroying more sites of pagan worship in Rome.
The popes converted the structure into a castle, beginning in the 14th century; Pope Nicholas III connected the castle to St Peter's Basilica by a covered fortified corridor called the Passetto di Borgo. The fortress was the refuge of Pope Clement VII from the siege of Charles V's Landsknechte during the Sack of Rome (1527), in which Benvenuto Cellini describes strolling the ramparts and shooting enemy soldiers.
Leo X built a chapel with a Madonna by Raffaello da Montelupo. In 1536 Montelupo also created a marble statue of Saint Michael holding his sword after the 590 plague (as described above) to surmount the Castel. Later Paul III built a rich apartment, to ensure that in any future siege the Pope had an appropriate place to stay.
Montelupo's statue was replaced by a bronze statue of the same subject, executed by the Flemish sculptor Peter Anton von Verschaffelt, in 1753. Verschaffelt's is still in place and Montelupo's can be seen in an open court in the interior of the Castle.
The Papal state also used Sant'Angelo as a prison; Giordano Bruno, for example, was imprisoned there for six years. Another prisoner was the goldsmith Cellini. Executions were made in the small interior square. As a prison, it was also the setting for the third act of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca; the eponymous heroine of the opera leaps to her death from the Castel's ramparts.

This is an outstanding view up to famous Castel Sant'Angelo. The castle is in superb light and in excellent contrast against blue sky. The arrangement with the walkway along the walls and the Tiber river and the bridge is perfect.
Very well done.

I also like that its a view we dont usually see from Rome, yet theres still that sense of Rome in the photo.
the bridge is well placed in the frame too.

Buona serata e complimenti,Luciano

a very impressive structure captured from a good angle. It doesn't look like a castle to me, more like a giant lighthouse:) Good contrast with the sky and lovely light.
Thanks and best wishes!

Two things really elevate this shot, Romano: the light, which is dim but vivid as it illuminates the wall and mausoleum; and the curve of the walkway that you've used so brilliantly here to pull the eye through the shot. A side of Rome perhaps not as common to see, and you've displayed it nicely. Thanks!

Wow! You have given us a very interesting and informative note here and a most impressive photograph with which to illustrate it.
Your composition is excellent with wonderful "lead in" lines provided by the high wall on the left and the curvature of the water's edge, the main structure of the Castel Sant'Angelo standing proudly against a deep blue sky with its face toward the Tiber beautifully lit in bright sunshine.
An excellent photograph with lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

Salutations.

A good shot from Castel san Angelo viewed from from the Tevere banks
I regret that these banks in Rome are not more exploited for strolls, somewhat in contrast with Paris and the Seine

Bel colore, in questi toni naturali.
Inoltre entrambi nitidezza, come l'illuminazione sono grandi.
Molto buona immagine. mi piace
Godetevi una bella giornata.
I migliori auguri.

mkamionka (34559) 2014-03-28 8:31
wow this is such an impressive view of this famous structure. Fantastic composition with the river bank making so many attractive lines here. The sky was brilliant too with the clouds aligned to add one more geometrical feature. Great polarized light produced well saturated and natural colors. I like the low perspective with inclusion of the bridge but also the river itself.
Excellent work, I like it very much and it makes me want to go to Rome again :)
Have a great weekend,
PaulVDV (26622) 2014-03-29 12:59
I've never seen a picture of the Castel Sant'Angelo taken from this POV. It certainly gives us a new and a totally different look.
You've composed this picture very attractive with the curve of that huge wall.
The long white cloud fills the sky nicely above the castle.
Best regards, Paul

What a fantastic capture of this well-known monument! Your POV worked perfectly to build classy and elegant presentation. Sharpness and exposure were executed very well to achieve a top class shot. Bravo!
annjackman (21674) 2014-03-30 12:56
The clarity is most impressive and your viewpont has used the wall and path to make a very good lead in to the main subject. The beautiful architectural details are enhanced by the lovely light. The golden reflections on the river are particularly lovely.
Kind Regards, Ann

the Castel Sant'Angelo and the brigde are well known and presented often on photos from Rome. But I´m really impressed by Your vision of this scene and completely new perspective you´ve found to capture these both subjects.
Great to see how excellently you used the curved pavement to lead our eyes towards the main attractions and how it creates so attractive visual effect.
Have a nice day
ChrisJ (109414) 2014-04-03 12:29
The sweeping curves of the Tiber River add good lead in lines and natural perspective with the embankment wall at left coverging towards the circular stone tower and the bridge. Nice warm cold color contrasts between the blue sky and reddish hued tower. Tfs!
ourania (41132) 2014-04-08 13:49
Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buona notte,
delpeoples (56722) 2014-04-08 15:34

This is wonderful piece of architecture in nicely composed picture. The arch of the wall with sidewalk and river made interesting foreground. The sky also formed special cloud for this shot. Well done with great quality.
Have a nice weekend,

romanaa (7984) 2014-04-14 14:05
brilliant composition here with the strong curve of the wall leading the eye to the all elements of the picture. Beautiful clarity and natural colours.
adores (43827) 2014-04-24 6:37
A good way to frame the castle! I like the diagonal formed by the wall and the way you included part of the bridge. An original pov and colours are also very good.
