The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the largest church in Rome dedicated to the 'Virgin Mary'. The church, which dates back to the fifth century, has a magnificent interior with a quite spectacular gilded ceiling and ornate chapels.
Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major) is one of four papal basilicas in Rome (the others are the St. Peter's Basilica, the St. John's Basilica and the St. Paul's Basilica). The church is located on the Cispius, a summit of the Esquiline Hill.
The name of the church ("major") implies that it is the most important of the eighty churches in Rome that are dedicated to Mary.

A lovely shot this. I like the symmetrical framing, perfectly accomplished, and the use of the path to draw the viewer in. The image is ideally exposed; colours are saturated but not overly so and the detail is superb. I like it very much.

This is a beautiful symetric picture of this nice church. The light was very nice and the colors are just perfect.

a stunning example of architectural symmetry and your lite point of view makes it very grand and dramatic. Beautiful church and this blue sky is a perfect way to present it. The green cross despite being quite small stand out very well, like a beacon to the city. Thanks for sharing this very cool image

I think I've visited this impressive church in Rome but I don't understand why you've posted it under Vatican City.
From your chosen POV, you present us a beautiful symmetrical image with the obelisk nicely dividing both parts.
I also like the ocher colour of the buildings around the church, very beautiful under that integral blue sky.
Best regards, Paul

This is a well composed image of the Basilica in good light. The details are clear and sharp. The polarising filter has done a good job of darkening the sky.
I love the contrast in colour with the matching buildings on each side.

splendid view from facade of basilica you captured.
holmertz (53502) 2014-06-28 7:03
I remember the interior of this church as one of the most beautiful in Rome. It is very impressive from the outside too, and you once again managed an almost perfectly symmetric composition. If only those tourists had placed themselves in the right spots :-). Your light management and colours are as impressive as the church.
ourania (46288) 2014-06-28 8:12
the church is very attractive and your presentation of it is really impressive. I like how you followed the symmetrical pattern with your composition and how effectively you used an upward point of view to add dynamism and fill the frame with interest. Colours and contrasts are magnificent, the details of the church are stark clear (even in the shady part) and I also like how interesting details and colours all over bring the whole of the scenery to life. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,

Hi Gosia,a spectacular choice of point of view to create this imposing perspective, truly beautiful and in a perfect simmetry, bright colors, fine detail....for me is enough..hehehhe....a great advertising for my country,i like it! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano
ChrisJ (114657) 2014-06-28 9:59
Good symmetry with the 2 bookending reddish orange buildings either side, and they also add a nice colour contrast between the blue sky to give a superb warm cold colour contrast. Wish I had have had more time to explore the Vatican. A nice upward pov and the people add scale. Tfs!

I guess we need to go back to the Vatican!
I don't remember this view..we were rushed and didn't get to see all the outside views :(
good idea to set the scene in this manner.
well composed, well balanced, and well lite.
creative and well executed...but then again all of your shots are :)

CLODO (34546) 2014-06-29 0:50
The symetry is just broken by the colored cloth of the sitting persons and the flying birds in the deep blue sky.
have a nice sunday
timecapturer (49288) 2014-06-29 3:27
superbly chosen POV that captures the magnificence and presence of this amazing building so irresistibly. Glorious detailing and sharpness under an intensely blue sky. Awesome!
Enjoy your Sunday - B.

Fantastyczna symetria i kolory.

l love this POV and the blue sky background!
The architectural details are fantastic of the Basilica.
Very nice catch again!

A well photographed place.. you did so well. Great POV, and wonderful light control. I especially love the 3D feeling of the image, beautiful detail and perspective.
photoray (13981) 2014-06-30 17:47
Fine centered view of the Basilica emphasizing the unique obelisk with cross on top. The architecture is a fine classical mixture of varying elements, the temple like entrance and two dominating towers. Could easily be perceived as a palace.
Would enjoy visiting in person, going inside and also strolling the neighborhood.
jemaflor (98029) 2014-06-30 23:29
Perfectly presented, good pov and what a fantastic light and colors, well managed, interesting contribution about this monument.

Hello Gosia! Lovely shot here, and I love the perspective, with the column bisecting the building perfectly. Amazing deep blue sky behind it as well! Thanks.
bona (13737) 2014-07-02 19:34
what a wonderful Basilica. Love this pretty blue you got on the sky and the birds flying. Funny to see a so pretty place with very few people in front of it taking photos.
chrislo (4097) 2014-07-03 14:44
An esthetically pleasing and tastefully framed shot captured in a symmetrical manner to show the architecture at its best, with the obelisk standing right in the middle of the two cupolas. The architectural details are clearly seen, and your low-angle view gives a good sense of height and proportions. The deep blue polarized sky makes a perfect topping and a fine contrast to the bright and colourful buildings. Nicely composed.

Znakomity kadr i super kolorystyka.
abmdsudi (54565) 2014-07-07 7:51
An interesting and informative pre-narrative supported by a wonderful composition with both interest and clarity in depth. Impressive colour, the deep blue sky sky sets it off and inclusion of the figure adds a touch or realism in this huge area. A wonderful piece of photography, Congrats
Cricri (120143) 2014-07-07 11:14

Hello Gosia - The obelisk surmounted by the cross is very imposing in this well composed symmetrical shot. The pathway leads directly to it and despite its simplicity it towers over the basilica and is a real attention grabber. I like the way the geometry of your composition creates a series of triangles between key architectural features. Nicely managed as always.
mjw364 (1224) 2014-07-09 10:10
A balanced, symmetrical composition with good lead lines taking us in to the main subject of the building. your polariser also came into its own here with that sumptuous blue sky.
Thanks and have a good evening

The presence of the people has an effect of scale. The length of the piazza is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing with precision the details and the colors of the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica. The good luminosity is making the colors to stand out.
adramad (45994) 2014-07-15 15:14
Superb composition of this splendid basilica symmetry that divide the building with the fabulous obelisk is perfect, this looks great its exact verticality.
A bright day with a great color.
Good management of the brightness and sharpness.
Well done. I love it.
Have a good day.
asajernigan (21427) 2014-07-20 5:24
This is a nice symmetrical composition that is well balanced. The lighitng is great as is the photo's color and sharpness. The path leads the eye into the scene perfectly.

hi gosia. it was a beautiful day, really. the blue is incredible, i would say. and your vantge point combined with an immaculately chosen central POV gave you a wonderful photo of this major roman catholic church. its quality is worthy of being published in guidebooks or catalogues.
