The Gallery of Maps is a gallery located on the west side of the Belvedere Courtyard in the Vatican containing a series of painted topographical maps of Italy based on drawings by friar and geographer Ignazio Danti.
The galley was commissioned in 1580 by Pope Gregory XIII as part of other artistic works commissioned by the Pope to decorate the Vatican. It took Danti three years (1580–1583) to complete the 40 panels of the 120 m long gallery.
The panels map the entirety of the Italian peninsula in large-scale frescoes, each depicting a region as well as a perspective view of its most prominent city.
With the Apennines as a partition, one side depicts the regions surrounded by the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas and the other depicts the regions surrounded by the Adriatic Sea.
The decorations on the vaulted ceiling are the work of a group of Mannerist artists including Cesare Nebbia and Girolamo Muziano.

Wonderful. I just posted a photograph of the doorway at the end of the gallery. The brightness and the detailed artistery of the ceiling is seen to be believed. The golden gleam is aptly expressed in your photograph. The maps on the left are brightened by the tall open windows on the right. The crowd is another interesting aspect of the photograph. I have been there twice and have not found the gallery any less populated.
The proportions of the gallery and the craftsmanship involved in making of the ceiling has been photographed with sharpness and high saturation of colours.
Thanks for sharing.

it is really difficult to make photos in there, the light is low and it is too crowded as well, people always pushing you from your back. here, the result is just clever, more of the ceiling than the walking people. well, how i miss that place...

I was there a week ago and I see that there are still many people (to much perhaps ...) visiting Vatican Museum. I have realized a similar shot which I will share later. This one is very impressive on the little icon and still more when opening it. Excellent fotojob.TFS.
