Piazza San Pietro, is located directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the papal enclave within Rome
The open space which lies before the basilica was redesigned by Gian Lorenzo Bernini from 1656 to 1667, under the direction of Pope Alexander VII, as an appropriate forecourt, designed "so that the greatest number of people could see the Pope give his blessing, either from the middle of the façade of the church or from a window in the Vatican Palace". Bernini had been working on the interior of St. Peter's for decades; now he gave order to the space with his renowned colonnades, using the Tuscan form of Doric, the simplest order in the classical vocabulary, not to compete with the palace-like façade by Carlo Maderno, but he employed it on an unprecedented colossal scale to suit the space and evoke emotions of awe.

Ciao Christian,
It is my favourite place - thank you! We visited Rome in May - it was the first time to my fiancee and we undestood again how nice is this place. In addition my personal favourite is Bernini - his name is not known on that level as it should be.
I like his touch on Rome:)
Have a nice week!

Hi Christian,
Very nice, clean, and sharp panorama. Beautiful and balanced lighting. The pano gives a very good idea of sheer size & scale of the square. I've here before but I have forgotten the magnitude of this place. Thanks for showing. Best Regards. Latiff.

Hello Christian,
Good panorama of this famous place, we have a large vision, good work.

Christian,
This is a very nice LP created with a fine job of stitch work. The lighting and colors are great with nice detail. The sharpness may be a little overdone (it shows up more in the large view)but does not hurt the quality of the photo.
TFS,
Asa

Hello Christian,
Beautiful panorama view of this great place with such a good depth!
the exposure and focus is spot on with great sharpness, lighting and details in the shot
very well done
best regards
Tony

Hi Christian. Great photo and well captured. Excellent colour and detail. Well composed also. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hello Christian,
Excellent panoramic view of a much seen place. I don't know how many photos you've used here, but the stitching work is seamless and the large view really gives the impression that we are standing on the piazza. I'm surprised that you didn't get any "ghost" on the pictures given the high number of people hanging around.
Cheers.
Bibi

Nice panorama, super sharp too. I had success in the past with some myself (Canon stitch program, which I also use on shots taken with my other camera), but didn't post any on TE, only TL.
Cheers
Otto

Hi Christian,
Superb panoramic picture but I'm puzzled I didn't see ghosts with so many people and stitched pictures.
Cheers
Marc

Wow, the large version is like being there, the light brings out the repetitive columns while the clouds keep the sky nice and busy. When posting large panoramics, I try to keep the vertical size under 1000 pixels to minimize vertical scrolling needed to see everything (you also retain more image quality that way to stay withing the 400kb file size). In my opinion a panoramic shot needs only horizontal scrollling to enjoy the view, vertical makes it too much work.

Bonjour Christian
Un excellent panorama qui permet d'apprécier tous les détails de cette superbe place et les différentes architectures.C'est superbe

Hi Christian,

effective and well presented panorama shot. I can't think of a better way to show that square and architecture than yours. The details are superb, great lighting and natural colors as well. The large version is a must-see! Well done!
Regards,
Carlos

Wow! that has to be the largest Pan shot yet on TE. Fantastic shot Christian, this bring back memories of my visit in 2003. I climbed to the top St. Peter's Basilica and had a wonderful view over the city. Very nice work..

Hi Christian

wonderful panoramic, lovely composition and POV.

Regards
Derek

Hi christian!
This is a great photo of this place, and the panorama is really well made (a pity for the TE size limitations though) as it deserves a much bigger appearance on the screen :)

Congratulations! Excellent job!
Cheers, Pascal

WoW for the large version!
This place is one of the greatest squares in the world, not only for its meaning to lots of people, but also for its Renaissance + Baroque beauty. You found a great POV, made use of excellent lens quality, and the man in blue at the right hand side, is working perfectly for the balance of horizontal compo. It is one of the rare photos of the place, which gives that "closed circle" feeling. Congrats!
