Villa d'Este
Built by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, son of Alfonso I and Lucrezia Borgia (Ferrara 1509 - Rome 1572), on a site that has in the past had been the site of a Roman villa.
The cardinal in 1550 was appointed Governor of Tivoli by Pope Julius III and transformed the convent in which reaction housed in a magnificent villa on which channeled the waters dell'Anienepr feed the many fountains in the park.
The work was completed in 1572, shortly before the death of the cardinal.
In 1918, after various vicissitudes the villa passed to the Italian state which prompted major restoration work, restoring full and opening it to the public.
