Rome - Ponte Milvio (Milvian Bridge)
The Milvian (or Mulvian) Bridge (Italian: Ponte Molle or Ponte Milvio, Latin: Pons Milvius or Pons Mulvius) is a bridge over the Tiber in northern Rome. It was an economically and strategically important bridge in the era of the Roman Empire and was the site of the famous Battle of Milvian Bridge.
A bridge was built by consul Gaius Claudius Nero in 206 BC after he had defeated the Carthaginian army in the Battle of the Metaurus. In 115 BC, consul Marcus Aemilius Scaurus built a new bridge of stone in the same position, demolishing the old one. In 63 BC, letters from the conspirators of the Catiline conspiracy were intercepted here, allowing Cicero to read them to the Roman Senate the next day. In AD 312, Constantine I defeated his stronger rival Maxentius between this bridge and Saxa Rubra, in the famous Battle of the Milvian Bridge.
During the Middle Ages, the bridge was renovated by a monk named Acuzio, and in 1429 Pope Martin V asked a famous architect, Francesco da Genazzano, to repair it because it was collapsing. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the bridge was modified by two architects, Giuseppe Valadier and Domenico Pigiani.
The bridge was badly damaged in 1849 by Garibaldi's troops, in an attempt to block a French invasion, and later repaired by Pope Pius IX in 1850.
In 2000s, the bridge began attracting couples, who use a lamppost on the bridge to attach love padlocks as a token of love. The ritual involves the couple locking the padlock to the lamppost, then throwing the key behind them into the Tiber. The ritual was invented by author Federico Moccia for his popular book and movie "I Want You".
After April 13, 2007, couples had to stop this habit because that day the lamppost, due to the weight of all padlocks, partially collapsed. However, couples decided to attach their padlocks elsewhere. In fact, all around the bridge, road posts and even garbage bins have been used to place these love padlocks. As an online replacement, a web site has been created allowing couples to use virtual padlocks. From July 2007, for people in love, it's possible to attach padlocks again thanks to steel columns put by the mayor.] Similar Love padlocks traditions have appeared in other places of Italy and Europe. The bridge is also an important meeting venue for young Romans, especially during summer. In fact, from May to July "the bridge", is crowded by hundreds of young boys and girls in summer break after the end of the school. In winter, due to the cold, they normally meet during the weekends in the numerous bars near the bridge for the typical "aperitivo" (happy hour) from 6 to 8 pm. On September 2012 the authorities decided to remove all padlocks by force.

One bridge too far.. for a tourist like myself - never been to this side of Roma.
good depth created by the length of the old bridge across the Tiber, daylight enhanced its green water texture, and show well the gate and dome on far side. A fine shot.
Bravo & buona serata,

For this photo you found a very good POV where you could anchor the composition in the trees below you. From the left side the bridge makes a diagonal across the very green river, through the "gate" and on to the church further back. The colours are strong and, as always, well saturated, and the clouds are nicely shaped. The note about the love padlocks is interesting. This has become a popular habit everywhere, but I never heard before of this proof of ever-lasting love attached to garbage bins.

Good composition in big format, it lets fully admire bridge and surroundings from a creative point of view, as always color and shapness are well managed with the help of o so blue sky
Like the red catching color given by the flag on top of the tower at the back ( which building is it?)
Very good capture, congrats
Concerning the padlocks , is a use spread all over the world, from Israel to China
I have in my gallery someones hanging on the Bridge of Love in Paris

Another topclass capture from Rome ; again a not much known part of the city. Good chosen portrait format fits perfectly to your compo.
Many interesting notes makes your entry a perfect TE entry.
TFS and best regards

Note intéressante. Bien fait.

extraordinary picture and of very high quality. The choice of the format as well as the composition is very good in here. The bridge links the banks of the river at nice angle and leads an eye towards group of interesting architecture. The greenery at the bottom frames the image and the sky with some picturesque looking clouds gives very pretty background.
I like the colors which have been nicely saturated yet staying natural as well as well managed light.
Thanks for sharing and all the best

I like that you show us these new, or at least less common views in Rome.

amazing cloud coverage makes the scene more enjoyable as well. lovely city shot

The point of view is excellent with the line of the bridge drawing the viewer in toward the domed church in the background. The light is also very good and the colours pleasing and well saturated. Very good sharpness. I have to say I find these love padlocks a bit twee and a rather an eyesore not to say somewhat dangerous. Similar problems are experienced by the authorities in Paris; perhaps they could learn something from their counterparts in Rome.

Fantastic view, great bridge & nice colors. Very good contrast between deep blue sky with intersting clouds and white beige tones of the buidings.
Very well done--

Stunning capture of the spanning ancient bridge and the city scene in such a delightful warm light and rich colors tones aided by the wonderful cotton clouds. A standout captured from impressive viewpoint and perspective and i think this is quite a mean feat in getting it. A powerful image so well taken, Congrats

Interesting angle, showing the ancient Milvian Bridge with its impressive Roman arches crossing the Tiber.
I never have understood the attraction of padlocks on bridges, though I do remember "Three Coins in a Fountain" as a romantic movie from my youth.
Thanks for sharing,

Great deep picture with a nice perspective on the foreground
The old bridge has a great importance in this composition

a very fascinating sight and an excellently composed impression of this well known bridge due to your outstanding skills. The light and the colors are fantastic. The photographer’s perspective is also excellent. And I read your note with great interest. My compliments!

It's a pity that all the love padlocks had been removed; I intended to hang one of those to the handrail of this historic stone bridge because I'm falling in love with it's elegant arches spanning over the river!
So much greenery on each side of The Tiber wraps it up as a precious jewel.
Thanks for showing!
adores (33924) 2014-05-31 16:08
Very good, the pov, the format and the colours. You managed light very well here and I like the composition with those clouds above the bridge!
Angshu (54497) 2014-06-04 0:14
The tale of the padlocks is indeed highly interesting! Your note made a good read. The perspective of the bridge is beautifully done, but I also like the fine architecture at the end of it on the other side.
Your city is replete with the jewels of architecture...thanks for sharing the same with us every day!
