I had a quick look at St Peters and opted not to stand in 40c heat for 2 hours in the very long queues. I had a protective lens replaced in a camera shop in a side street nearby here, so I made the most of my time. The Vatican shuts around 4pm, so a morning visit is better for anyone thinking of visiting, and do check if tickets can be purchased online too. An impressive basilica for sure. I had only ever seen scale models of it before or pictures. Great to see it up close even under hard backlight.
I never realized I had left Italy and entered Vatican City by catching the metro subway train and departing at Ottavianno San Pietro station. No passports or border controls were in evidence.

beautiful composition of the impressive building displayed with excellent clarity in spite of the difficult back light. I liked especially the stretch of included foreground that gives a great feel of depth and open space. The warm colours contrast beautifully with the clear blue sky. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

reading your note its easy to feel your excitement for this place you always wanted to see in person.
and despite the harsh lighting you mentioned, it still looks pretty darn good! excellent in fact.
still lots of details and sharpness on the building front.
hope you enjoyed your short stay.

The wideness of the piazza is giving depth to the composition. The presence of the people is adding life to the scene. The point of view is showing the détails and the colors of the St.Peter's basilica. The good luminosity is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

instantly recognisable this. Nice to see it without too many humans blocking the space and majesty of its setting. Gloriously enticing composition. Looks wonderful!
Enjoy the weekend - B.

There are few people in evidence no doubt due to the intense heat, thus offering a clear view of the Basilica; the stone bollards curving in from the bottom left make a good set of lead-lines. I like the light and shadow contrasts and the backdrop offered by the clear blue sky. Thanks for your tip about Wikitravel; Wikivoyage is very similar and is an offshoot I think. I am only going to have five days each in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart plus another five in Hong Kong so will probably only have time to do all the obvious stuff. But any suggestions for something out of the ordinary would be appreciated.

Ciao e buon fine settimana
