Rome – Lateran Baptistery
The domed octagonal Lateran Baptistery stands somewhat apart from the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, Rome, to which it has become joined by later construction. This baptistery was founded by Pope Sixtus III in 440, perhaps on an earlier structure, for a legend grew up that Constantine the Great had been baptized there and enriched the structure. However it is more likely that if he was baptized it was in the Eastern part of the Roman Empire and possibly by an Arian bishop. This baptistry was for many generations the only baptistery in Rome, and its octagonal structure, centered upon the large octagonal basin for full immersions provided a model for others throughout Italy, and even an iconic motif of illuminated manuscripts, "The fountain of Life".
Around the central area, where is the basin of the font, an octagon is formed by eight porphyry columns, with marble Corinthian capitals and entablature of classical form. On the ceiling of the Baptistry is the story of the Battle of the Milvian Bridge (312). An ambulatory surrounds the font and outer walls form a larger octagon. Attached to one side, towards the Lateran basilica, is a fine porch with two porphyry columns and richly carved capitals, bases and entablatures.
Its plain brick exterior is embellished with a frieze designed by Francesco Borromini in 1657, incorporating the arms of Pope Alexander VII.

Caro amico, Romano,
Spectacular shot and the first image I've seen of the interior of the Lateran Baptistery. I had heard about it from my Italian aunt, Adriana d'Amico. The perfectly symmetric presentation works especially well.

I love photographs of church interiors and this is a delightful one, full of wonderful rich colours and with amazing details, especially when viewed at its full size of 2333 x 3500 pixels when even the smallest script is readable. An interesting note too. How fortunate you are to live in a city which such an amazing wealth of places like this!
You have composed this picture very well and you have coped with the low light admirably. A beautiful photograph perfectly presented.

Grazie come sempre

Romano, this looks like a gorgeous place, and you have given us a great taste of it here. The vertical presentation is a good choice, giving a sense of how far up it goes, and the details are all very sharp. I have never been to this baptistery; I'll have to remember it when I'm in Rome again. Thanks.

Hello Romano - You have managed your exposure very well and I like your composition very much. The framing given by the pillars with the carved capitals is super giving depth as well as detail. The highly decorative walls look rich and warm. How beautiful.

This has a lovely quality to the light with the strongest golden tones fading further down the image. The detail is wonderful and a very pleasing composition . Excellent light management to display those subtle painting colours so well and still capturing the detail in the shadowed posts at the bottom.
Thanks for sharing

The subtle light and tones is the winner in this interior Basilica, with wonderful bit of dapple of soft warm light falling on the top section creating a special ambient. Magnificent with extensive details and its uniqueness and style of the architecture in good symmetry and elaborately decorated. The pov has greatly accentuated the depth and height to greatest effect with the dark brown columns hold as strong focal points. Pin sharp throughout, an image to be proud off. Fine works. Congrats

Complimentoni e buon weekend.

Very beautiful indeed, with all those paintings. You managed light really well and the composition is great, with the columns and the engravings at the top, in foreground. Good work!
I'm happy you liked the poppies:)!
