Rome - Torre delle Milizie
The Torre delle Milizie ("Tower of the Militia") is a fortified tower in Rome, Italy, located between the Trajan's Market in the Imperial fora to the east and the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum to the west.
It gained the popular nickname of "Nero's Tower" from a tradition that it originated as an ancient Roman construction from which Emperor Nero watched the Great Fire of Rome – this is derived from the classical account that he watched from a tower in the Gardens of Maecenas, though more trustworthy accounts place him out of town, at Antium at the time.
The actual construction of the tower probably dates to the time of Pope Innocent III (1198–1216) under the Aretino family. At the end of the 13th century, the tower was a possession of the powerful Annibaldi family, who were followed by the Prefetti di Vico and by the Caetani, Pope Boniface VIII's family. Under the Caetani the fortified quarter was enlarged and strengthened, probably rivalling with Castel Sant'Angelo as Rome's main fortress. At the end of the 13th century When Henry VII of Luxembourg came to the city for his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor (May–June 1312), he chose the Torre delle Milizie as the base for his Guelph supporters. Twenty years later the tower was ceded to the Conti. During their ownership Raphael, in his role as curator of the antiquities of the city, cited the tower as an example of an edifice built re-using antique parts. The Conti held the tower until 1619, when it was acquired by the nuns of the neighbouring convent (later demolished) of Santa Caterina a Magnanapoli.
In 1911, the tower was declared an Italian National Monument.
One of the main medieval monuments of the city, the Torre delle Milizie is built on a square plan, its base sides measure 10.5 × 9.5 m. The original height of the tower is uncertain, but following the earthquake of 1348, the top two floors were demolished, reducing the structure to its present height of approximately 50 metres (160 ft). The 1348 earthquake also resulted in the slight tilting of the structure.

Un très beau cadrage vertical pour nous montrer une partie de la ville que je ne connaissais pas. Même si la tour penche un petit peu elle conserve encore beaucoup de force. La lumière est superbe sur ces beaux murs antiques.

Impresive capture of a tower that I never saw in Roma, interesting note about history and Nero watching from here the great fire
Also the old building taken with good light is impresive
The holes are make for bullets, I believe?
Like the vertical format , quite adecuated for the tower, is ir a bit tilt towards the right?

Ciao Romano ,

Cielo magnifico come sfondo.
Bel colore, in questi toni naturali.
Inoltre entrambi nitidezza, come l'illuminazione sono grandi.
Beh, prese la foto. mi piace
Godetevi una bella giornata.
I migliori auguri.

Wherever you turn in Rome you will face a building of historic significance. This tower may not be among the most famous landmarks of the city, but along with the surrounding buildings it forms a complex of eternal value and beauty. You have composed this well with very good colours and light management and a fine balance between the brown tones of the buildings and the surrounding greenery.

Ciao Caro Romano,
This is an excellent shot, where the building is sharply exposed and there are interesting contrasts of light and shadow. You have placed the tower off-centre for strength of composition.
I never cease to be amazed by the scale and the scope of historic buildings in Rome! It is truly a historians paradise.
Are those holes the result of some military attack or, maybe some cladding that has been removed?
My warm regards,

un altro modo di vedere questo luogo storico e bello, la luce è ancora dalla tua parte, mi piace il suo comportamento sui vari piani della costruzione.
Unico neo, pende un po' a destra, ma è una facile correzione.

WoW! this structure is amazing. So huge and imposing and captured in this light so architecturally impressive and beautiful. Glorious textures and detailing here and I love the trees set in amongst the rustic tones to add organic contrast. Stunning!

Hello Romano - An excellent shot with such good detail. I like all the dark windows and arches in the facade, they contrast with the warm tones of the brickwork. The way the light is catching the building is also adding to the impression of form and volume. Top class and one I like a lot. Warm regards Rosemary
