Rome - Porta San Paolo
The Porta San Paolo is one of the southern gates in the 3rd-century Aurelian Walls of Rome, Italy. The Ostiense Museum is housed within the gatehouse. Just to the west is the Pyramid of Cestius, an Egyptian-style pyramid, and beyond that is the Protestant Cemetery.
The original name of the gate was Porta Ostiensis because it was located of the beginning of via Ostiense, the road that connected Rome and Ostia where functioned as its main gate. Via Ostiense was an important arterial road as evidenced by the fact that upon entering the gate of the same name, the road split, with one direction leading to the famous Roman Emporium, the great market of Rome.
The gatehouse is flanked by two cylindrical towers, and has two entrances, which had been covered by a second, single-opening gate, built in front of the first by Belisarius (530s–540s).
The structure is due to Maxentius, in the 4th century, but the two towers were heightened by Honorius. Its original — Latin — name was Porta Ostiensis, since it opened on the way to Ostia. Later, it was renamed to the Italian Porta San Paolo, because it was the exit of Rome that led to the St. Paul basilica outside the walls.
In 549, the Rome was under siege; the Ostrogoths of Totila entered through this gate, because of the treason of the Isaurian garrison. On 10 September 1943, two days after the armistice between the Allies and Italy had been agreed, Italian military and civil forces tried to block German seizure of the city, with 570 casualties.

like your composition here, with the crossing acting as an irresistible lead into the main subject of the image. Exquisite light and detailing make this such an attractive image of this impressive gate under blue skies. Wonderful!

gran bella inquadratura e magnifica luce, fa risplendere tutti i colori.

What a beautiful sample of defensive architecture, great clarity, detailed photo with good exposure and beautiful composition

This is a crystal clear photo with excellent, vibrant colours. You have used the graphically attractive zebra crossing and the white arrows very well to pull me towards the ancient gate and towers, and the inclusion of a part of the pyramid adds interesting lines to the composition.

Grazie come sempre, saluti dall'Irlanda!

Salutations.

The road leading to the gate is magnificent.
The towers are very unique.

The sloping wall, together with the pedestrian crossing are very important parts of this well composed picture. The gate is also well placed and highly interesting. A fine and very attractive street scene!

An appealing exposure control here and deep blue sky! A pleasing city view and the historic sight as the castle stands to grab attention with great details, textures and sharpness. Very well composed shot showing enough depth and perspective full of rich colour combination and the white crossing lines serve as strong focal, Great capture, Congrats

Buona sera Romano,
Fine shot over the south gate to old Roma, but about the pyramid which cropped its main edifice - I know the place and the monument is well seen with the Pyramid along, from just across the road.
Anyway, fine daylight enhanced the details, which were superbly collected.

What a nice view of a old fort gate in the middle of a modern city. In India also in many towns we see huge stone gates which were entrance to walled cities in old era.Excellent use of the zebra markings to lead our view towards the gate. The blue sky is beautiful and it is contrasting the scene beneath perfectly. Very well taken, thanks for sharing.

I know this place well(I´ve been there last time being in Rome)
Your presentation is brilliant!
I like especially how you used the zebra crossing to create perspective and to lead our eyes to the Porta San Paolo.Excellent and very smart idea, whcih also makes the graphics of the image more attractive and expressive.
Have a nice day

wow, it has stood that long! hard to believe its that old, simply amazing.
Imagine having the exact same pov when it was built...i wonder how it would have looked. For sure the road wouldn't have been paved as it is now :)
and i wonder what would have been around nearby...what type of buildings...if only we had a time machine.
wonderful post for TE, i don't think i've seen this from Rome before.

devo proprio migliorare negli interni..

Hi Romano - You have used the strong lines in a pleasing punchy composition. Many would attempt to take a shot without the crossing and sloping wall but I think they are both strong compositional elements. Nicely done! Warm regards Rosemary

As I said before, your city has so much to offer that even one lifetime may not be enough to cover the beauty she has to offer with her landmarks.
This is a nice & unusual (for me) place with the gayte turned museum with the zebra crossing leading us into the picture

It is indeed beautiful... Great capture of this nice architecture with a fantastic POV. Great sharpness and depth. Superb colour tone. Very well done. Tfs.

fantastic geometry of the composition. Everything seems to go well together. I like the lines in the foreground they lead the eye well to the gate. In the left there seem to be a pyramide rising, and the sky is so pleasant too. Great light with nice shadows which make it vivid and feeling three dimensional.
