Piazza Navona - Fountain of Neptune
The Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune) is a fountain in Rome, Italy, located at the north end of the Piazza Navona. It was once called "Fontana dei Calderari" because it was located close to a small alley with blacksmith's workshops, makers of pots and pans and of other metal based businesses, all of them generating heat.
The restoration of the Roman Aqua Virgo aqueduct in 1570 was immediately followed by the start of work on a continuation water supply pipe towards the district of the old Campo Marzio, which following the diminution of the city's size and importance was left as the most densely populated part of the city. Restoration of a piped water supply in turn permitted the construction of several public fountains. The basin part of the Fontana del Nettuno, (without the sculptures) was designed in 1574 by Giacomo Della Porta, who also designed the Moor Fountain at the other side of the square. It was sponsored by pope Gregory XIII. The lower part of the basin consists of white marble and the upper part of the local stone from Pietrasanta. For the next 300 years, the fountain survived without statues.
Nineteenth century infrastructure developments reduced dependence on urban fountains for drinking and washing purposes but increased their visual and political importance, especially following the creation of the Italian state with Rome as its capital after 1870. The fountain as it exists today was finally completed in 1878 by Antonio della Bitta, who added the imposing sculpture of "Neptune fighting with an octopus" and Gregorio Zappalà, who created the other sculptures, based on the mythological theme of the "Nereids with cupids and walruses". Statuary was added following a competition in 1873, in order to balance the statuary of the Moor Fountain on the south side of the piazza and of the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) at its centre.

Cia Romano ,

A luminous view of Piazza Navona, with the blue sky above and the snow on the ground

Bellissimi colori troppo!
Tutti i migliori

so do you live directly in Rome? if you do, you're a lucky lucky man!
you live in a travellers paradise.
Funny how we don't get to see many photos of snow in rome, usually we see snowy photos of Italy, but not Rome itself - so these are always welcome.
love the curve of the buildings in the bg, its almost as if they all suddenly stood up for you before you took the photo :)

Ciao Caro Romano,
You have made excellent use of light and shade in your photograph; the contrasts have made the building appear to be in a spotlight, giving excellent clarity to their details.
You have composed this well. The figure of Neptune would not have been so effective had ne been competing with the window and balcony in the b/g.
Have a great w/e,

Sharpness, management of difficult light, colors, horizontal format, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!

Hello Romano - Fabulous crisp winter light has given wonderful contrasting colour here and despite the snow on the ground the Piazza Navona looks so inviting. I'm thinking that ages ago when the blacksmiths were working in unbearable heat the cold weather would have been a treat for them! A lovely photograph taken under the best conditions. Have a good weekend Rosemary

Very beautiful shot of this magnificent corner of Rome. The division of the frame into equal shadow and light portions looks very attractive. Lovely colours and warm light on the buildings. The bright blue sky is contrasting the scene beneath very nicely. Nice shot with rich colours and fine light. Thanks for sharing.

Not at all like the similarly named fountain in Bologna. The beautifully lit façades make a superb backdrop to the fountain, which we are able to admire in great detail. The sole occupant of the square, apart from the photographer that is, is well placed and offers a fine sense of scale. Additional interest is provided by the light and shadow contrasts on the opposite sides of the square. I like very much the vivid saturated colours and superb sharpness. I wish you a very pleasant weekend.

Rome in the snow must be amazing, and when I see shots like this I know that it has to be seen to appreciate its beauty, but this glorious image makes it 2 dimensionally palpable. Stunning light and execution makes this a classy and breath taking image. Love it!
Enjoy your weekend - B.

Attractive view of The Fontana del Nettuno, before the crowds arrive, early morning light detailing the surrounding architecture, and in warm colors.

The foreground looks cold as ice :) but what a wonderful warm tones on the facades of the buildings. Very beautiful in contrast with the blue winter sky.
Excellent colourful and sharp capture.
Best regards, Paul

Buona notte

I like this Rome full of snow - it is so different from all the pictures normally presented from there. This square is especially beautiful with this amazing fountain in the center and the colorful buildings surrounding it. Very nice light on the houses makes them contrast with the rest of the scene. Pretty blue sky gives good background.
Well given contrast and sharpness.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your Sunday

Congratulations for this picture. Good presentation of this little square in wintertime. The light and colors are superb!

Piazza Navona was virtually the first place I saw in Rome, being very close to where I stayed during my first visit in 1969. Although it is a very touristic place it is always a nice area to come back to because of the beautiful buildings lining the square and the impressive statues and fountains. On this day in February you managed a photo without the tourists, giving us a nicely undisturbed view. The clear blue sky and the warm colours also make this photo very appealing.

This grabs me from the thumb, a real cool shot of a pretty looking buildings and historic square with cutting edge. What a brill deep blue giving the high contrast I like the way you've filled the frame, the sharpness, detail and colours give this shot real spark. A well thought out & taken, Congrats. TFS

A fine example of exquisite art, the Neptune fountain looks beautiful standing against the pastel houses in the BG. What is interesting is the amount of snow in the FG.,..the light has been well handled to create a lovely picture!

Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buona serata,
