Archbasilica of St. John Lateran
The Papal Archbasilica of St. John Lateran (Italian: Arcibasilica Papale di San Giovanni in Laterano), commonly known as St. John Lateran's Archbasilica, St. John Lateran's Basilica, and just The Lateran Basilica, is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome and the official ecclesiastical seat of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope.
It is the oldest and ranks first among the four Papal Basilicas or major basilicas of Rome (having the cathedra of the Bishop of Rome). It claims the title of ecumenical mother church among Roman Catholics. The current archpriest is Agostino Vallini, Cardinal Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome. The President of the French Republic, currently François Hollande, is ex officio the "first and only honorary canon" of the basilica, a title held by the heads of the French state since King Henry IV of France.
An inscription on the façade, Christo Salvatori, indicates the church's dedication to "Christ the Saviour", for the cathedrals of all patriarchs are dedicated to Christ himself. As the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, it ranks above all other churches in the Catholic Church, including St. Peter's Basilica. For that reason, unlike all other Roman Basilicas, it holds the title of Archbasilica.
The archbasilica is located outside of the boundaries of Vatican City proper, although within the city of Rome. However it enjoys extraterritorial status as one of the properties of the Holy See. This is also the case with several other buildings, following the resolution of the Roman Question with the signing of the Lateran Treaty.
Between the basilica and the city wall there was in former times the great monastery, in which dwelt the community of monks whose duty it was to provide the services in the basilica. The only part of it which still survives is the 13th-century cloister, surrounded by graceful twisted columns of inlaid marble. They are of a style intermediate between the Romanesque proper and the Gothic, and are the work of Vassellectus and the Cosmati.

le colonne offrono un piacevole gioco, tra l'altro sono molto belle e diverse tra loro.
Bello il taglio scelto, il risultato è ottimo.

Very nice POV you have here, to show the different areas of this building and with the contrasting light effects upon them. I really like the fine detail in the columns, and how it is only on some of them. Thanks for a great note too!
All the best

I love photos of Italy, especially when they are such high quality and are accompanied by informative notes. My late Italian aunt, Adriana D'Amico, used to brag that Italy was the most beautiful country, and had the greatest art. I agreed in part with the first statement, and wholly with the second. (I've written two books on Leonardo.)

I like very much the point of view and the almost monochrome effect, which together create a very interesting and particular atmosphere. Superb rendering of the detail in the architecture.

Beautiful quality of light here Romano and so expertly managed. I do like the composition with the FG pillars showing the merest hint of colour and those in the rear contrasting in tone and adding a touch of colour. What could be a confused and busy shot is wonderfully clear thanks to the light contrasts between both layers and your immaculate composition. Top class. Warm regards Rosemary

Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buona serata,

J'aime beaucoup le jeu des ombres et de la lumière qui joue avec ces superbes arches. La répétition des éléments est très intéressante. L'image nous offre de belles textures.

Cloisters can be hard to photograph with the shadow areas and sometimes strong light. This picture is perfect with its interesting perspective. You have shown excellent detail in the stone and brickwork. Lovely earthy colours.
Very well done and TFS.
Kind Regards, Ann

I chiostri sono un soggetto che adoro. Sono rari e squisiti. Hai catturato tutti i dettagli perfettemente.

Ramano. I like the composition of this image with your very competent handling of the verticals within the picture. The columns in the foreground expertly used to frame the columns in the background.
