Photographer's Note

ENGLISH: This is the Old Boat at the foot of the Spanish Steps. Behind the boat you can see the old palazzo where the English poet John Keats lived and died. He is buried in the Protestant Cemetery not far away. The house itself is now a museum dedicated to the Romantic Writers and houses one of the largest collections of Romantic literature and manuscripts. It was bought by a trust in 1903 dedicated to preserving the legacy of these great writers.

ITALIANO: Questa e' la Vecchia Barcaccia nella Piazza di Spagna. Dietro la barca potete vedere il palazzo del poeta inglese John Keats.

What fabulous depth you have achieved with this picture! And such a refreshingly different view of the Spanish Steps than those we are more used to seeing.

A very difficult picture to take at the time considering the poor light and the fact that this place is always seething with people, you have managed exceedingly well with exquisite sharpness from the boat in the foreground to all the details of Keats's house set against a beautiful blue sky and beyond. The litle stream of water emanating from the front of the boat surely anchors the whole composition beautifully.

A wonderful photograph and an interesting note too. I see the name "Byron" on the front of the building - does that have any significance?

roma is always so fascinating.
a good friend o'mine spent almost a year in rome when he was serviceman in the carabinieri and he said: "you can stay there even all life long but rome is always able to surprise you"

Hi Lisa,
Not an easy task taking such a night scenery, and the result is fairly good - this time I'd like to suggest a crop just above the "Byron" sign, concetrating on the magnnificent fontana and boat, over people heads (always crowded there), leaving the rest for imagination. That's becouse the notable lense-distortion with the hight of the edifice, from this POV.
The light and contrast handled marvelously - as always.

What a pleasure to sit on those steps. It is full of people all day long.You give us a different point of view under a very special light.As I recall, the street in front of those steps is full of very good little restaurants.

Buonasera Lisa,

What a way to 'hit' a viewer with that attractive, almost mesmerising f/g, as a precursor to the buildings and the crowds.
It is a fine 'Blue Hour' shot where the details of the light seem to shimmer on the water or emblazon the building and the poster.

Lovely photo in your favorite pink colours. Unusual shot from the Spanish steps. Wonderful blue sky. The Museum there must be very interesting. How wonderful city Rome is, and many friends you can meet there. The boat in the fg looks interesting. I don't remember it from other photos.

Ciao Lisa, una veduta inedita della nostra Barcaccia, scatto notturno ma senza tripoid, bellissima ora blu che si rispecchia anche nell'acqua della fontana, nonostante tutto sei riuscita a dare un ottima profondità alla scena, gradevole anche la leggera distorsione della lente, sempre emozionante la mia Roma, ioo ho solo uno scatto della fontana, ma non mi soddisfa molto...per cui presto (lavoro permettendo) vorrei fare un giro serale a fare due scatti...per il momento spero presto di fotografare la tua bella terra...

The Spanish Steps are crowded, and your light control places them in the dark and the mysterious boat fountain up close and personal.

And once again I am envious for your Italia travels. Do you have any Appian Way visions?
Dr. Pratt my LA State U., Roman history prof, recommended strolling the Appian Way the entire length, and stop to sip Pepsi. Of course, I would have to sip some Chianti.

Ciao Lisa,
I remember the previous photo from the same POV but of the main theme of Spanish Steps.
It seems like in Rome you can basically turn a bit in every direction and always capture a spectacular view.
Great work here, I like the incredible fountain in the foreground and the slight deformation by the lens it results in a very interesting geometry.

A superb blue hour shot with good sharpness. That is half the battle won in low light conditions & a longer than usual exposure time. The people are still pretty sharp too with just a little motion blur of a few of them. I would add a little yellow & perhaps green. Seems to have a blue magenta colour cast on my monitor. But its not major & easily fixed in photoshop. I'm guessing about 15% yellow & 5% green. Might try a ws. Tfs!

Closeness of the boat is definitely a bonus adding strong impact to keep the main interest well in focus. Interesting description accompanying this shot, a beautifully taken lively image in excellent clarity, nice glow of the night shimmering through with good mix lightings. Nice pleasing shot Congrats.

We've seen this subject on TE many times, and of all the photos I don't think i have EVER seen a shot without alot of people sitting on those steps!
must be a sweet spot for people watching and just taking a break.
obliviously i'm going to enjoy the blue lighting, even the blues/purples in the water, and the architecture.

I remember this Old boat at the foot of the Spanish Steps. A very refreshing & not often seen POV of this oft photographed place. Like the colour tones...subtle shades of cool blue including the blue hour sky. The water coming out from the boat adds a lot to the picture. Lovely capture!
