The Garden of Ninfa is located on the border between the municipalities of Cisterna di Latina, Sermoneta and Norma, administratively belonging to the first joint.
It is from 2000, a Natural Monument of the Italian Republic and covers an area of 106 ha.
The Garden that houses samples of fauna and flora from across the world, tailored according to the principles of the so-called "garden", built on the ruins of an ancient medieval town.
The town of Ninfa, probably arose Volsci era when the small peninsula that extends into the namesake lake at the foot of Lepinis, built a primitive village.
Luck of Ninfa, arrived in the Middle Ages when the swamping of the Via Appia forced to divert traffic to the south along the piedmont road. Nymph became an independent municipality and rich, capable of defending themselves against attacks and neighbors Sezze Sermoneta. In addition to its position in the plains, with the presence of the remoteness of the lake and marsh, gave her a mild climate and healthy, especially in winter. The city came under the dominion of the Caetani, the late thirteenth century and their dates the construction of the castle and of the very tower.
In September 1159, Pope Alexander III, followed by Barbarossa, contrary to his election, took refuge here and in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, was crowned. Barbarossa, in revenge, burned the village. The Ninfini, but returned and rebuilt it stronger protection Caetani.
The expansion of wetlands, however, was fatal to Nymph, which began in the fourteenth century, a slow but inexorable decline. Its population was decimated by malaria and in the sixteenth century, was abandoned.
