Photographer's Note

Roman Burial Ground offers a revealing insight into Roman funeral customs between the 1st and 4th century AD. This period marks the transition from cremation (cinerary urns, altars) to burial (sacrophagi), the latter becoming much more widespread from the begining of the 2nd century. In the foreground is the tomb of the Stati family, one of the most impotrant families in Roman Aquileia.
