Gorizia (Gorica/Görz/Gurize/Горица) is a city in the northeast of Italy, on the border with the Slovenian city of Nova Gorica (Nuova Gorizia). See map at isontino.com.
This multiethnic European region has Trieste (Triest/Trst) as its main city. That was the Küstenland (Austrian Littoral), of the Austria-Hungary Empire. It is a region from the Austrian border to the Adriatic Sea, that includes the Italian autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Furlanija-Julijska krajina/Friûl-Vignesie Julie), the Slovenian Goriška and Primorska (Littoral) regions, and the Croatian part of Istria (Istarska županija). This is the meeting point of the three big cultural areas of Europe: the Germanic North, the Latin South and the Slavic East.
The Austria-Hungary Empire dominated the region since the 16th century. During the rule of the Habsburgs, Gorizia (Görz) was a summer vacation destination for the Austrian aristocracy.
After World War I, Gorizia was taken by Italy in 1918. During WWII it was under German occupation, then the Allies took control, and in 1947 it was returned to Italy. However, the international border with Yugoslavia was set on the city outer districts. Theses areas, including the train station (Stazione Transalpina), became part of the Yugoslav Slovenia; the fence of the border-line crossed the square in front of the station, like a small Berlin Wall. In 1948 the Yugoslavs constructed Nova Gorica (New Gorizia) in the eastern side.
In 1991 Slovenia became independent from Yugoslavia and in 2004 it joined the European Union. The Gorizia/Nova Gorica border became a inter-EU limit and the fence between the Italian and Slovenian sides was removed. Gorizia (Gorica/Görz/Gurize/Горица) é uma cidade no nordeste de Itália, literalmente em cima da fronteira com a Eslovénia. Do lado esloveno fica Nova Gorica (Nova Gorizia), uma cidade construída em 1948 após a partição do pós-guerra. A linha de fronteira passa no meio da praça em frente à estação ferroviária. A região sempre foi multi-étnica e durante vários séculos pertenceu ao Império Austro-Húngaro. Em 1991 a Eslovénia tornou-se independente da Jugoslávia e em 2004 aderiu à União Europeia. A antiga fronteira entre Goriza e Nova Gorica tornou-se assim obsoleta (ver Marco da Guerra Fria, cerca é derrubada na Europa e New square on the border-line [também em italiano e esloveno]).
