Romano posted lately photos from Ravenna. So, I looked at other photos from there and was astonished that there are less than 60 photos. and the mosaics in several churches have no equal. Can you imagine that these mosaics are intact about 1500 years?
The Basilica of San Vitale is one of the most important examples of early Christian Byzantine art. It is one of eight Ravenna structures inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The church was begun by Bishop Ecclesius in 526, when Ravenna was under the rule of the Ostrogoths and completed by the 27th Bishop of Ravenna, Maximian in 547 during the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna. The architect of the church is unknown.
The construction of the church was sponsored by a Greek banker, Julius Argentarius, of whom very little is known, except that he also sponsored the construction of the Basilica of Sant' Apollinare in Classe at around the same time. The building combines Roman elements: the dome, shape of doorways, and stepped towers; with Byzantine elements: polygonal apse, capitals, and narrow bricks. The church is most famous for its wealth of Byzantine mosaics, the largest and best preserved outside of Constantinople. The church is of extreme importance in Byzantine art, as it is the only major church from the period of the Emperor Justinian I to survive virtually intact to the present day.
he cross-ribbed vault in the presbytery is richly ornamented with mosaic festoons of leaves, fruit and flowers, converging on a crown encircling the Lamb of God. The crown is supported by four angels, and every surface is covered with a profusion of flowers, stars, birds and animals, including many peacocks. Above the arch, on both sides, two angels hold a disc and beside them a representation of the cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem. They symbolize the human race (Jerusalem representing the Jews, and Bethlehem the Gentiles).
I dedicate this photo for Romano, of course.

Ciao e buona serata

As i have said before to Romano the mosaics of San Vitale and other churches in Ravenna are among those experiences in art that have really knocked me out. I was totally overwhelmed when entering this church and seeing the mosaics with my own eyes, experiencing their true colours and size. No pictures can truly capture their impact on the viewer but you have done very well here. They haven't lost mouch of their vigour.

Your interior Basilica of San Vitale view does it justice for detailing the Byzantine art and architecture. Every inch is decorated and multiple color saturation.

The interior of this basilica looks indeed very impressive. The Byzantine influence is clearly visible. It's amazing that the mosaics have been preserved so well during 1.500 years.
Your picture shows excellently the many beautiful colours.
Best regards, Paul

Its colours all the way. A good control on the exposure and the shot is welcomed by one and all. Its the light which makes or breaks the shot-so goes the great saying, which perfectly suits the mood of your shot of the architecture and the interiors of the Church.

So many very impressive decorated cathedrals in Italy, and a few in Spain as well! Cordoba had a similar 'wow' factor to this, as well as San Martino in Naples, and Florence too. Good sharpness and color with excellent upward pov. Kudos to you for tilting your head back and possibly getting neck strain! I like the graphism of the 3 central windows at the top. Good sharpness, colour and perspective. Tfs!

A superb capture of this fantastic and captivating mosaic work. Ideally exposed despite the difficult light. Wonderful colours and exquisite detail.

Splendid, opulent interior, beautifully captured. Images like this always make me think of the conspicuous wealth of the Church set against the lives of the ordinary members of the congregation, especially at the time this interior was created. But it makes a lovely photograph.
