Photographer’s Note

San Secondo Parmense
Town located in the Plain

It has very old origins and in Copezzato , at the beginning of the 20th century, a necropolis pyre was discovered. The history of the town is tied with that of the Rossi family who founded an imposing castle there in the mid-1400s. The castle was restructured in the 1500s before being subjected to devastating destruction in the 1800s. The main 16th century stairwell ascends to the great hall decorated sumptuously with the family’s history (1570).
The central scene of the ceiling is attributed to Prospero Fontana and the grotesques to Cesare Baglione. The frescoes on the walls seem to be from Gerolamo Mirola and Jacopo Bertoja. Orazio Samacchini is the author of three splendid rooms that face the terrace. The room of the Golden Donkey, however, shows strong Mantuan influences. In the parochial church there are paintings from Chiavegiano, Antonio Bresciani, Gervasio Gatti, Panfilo Nuvolone. San Luigi (or Oratory of the Riscatto), completed between 1727 and '28, is significant for its unitary style.
