The Baptistery of Parma (Italian: Battistero di Parma) is a religious building located next to the cathedral (out of picture here on the left) in Parma, northern Italy. Architecturally, it marks a transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. It is considered to be among the most important Medieval monuments in Europe.
The Baptistery was commissioned to Benedetto Antelami by the City Council of Parma in 1196. The outside of pink Verona Marble is octagonal. The inside contains sixteen arches, forming alcoves each containing a painted scene. All these are 13th and 14th century frescoes and paintings. The most striking part of the Baptistery, however, is its painted domed ceiling. Sixteen rays come out of the center of the ceiling, which each correspond to the arches.
However, problems were posed over time as the paintings were not true frescoes. The paint would start to come off the walls and would be literally hanging on. Due to this, the Baptistery had to be painstakingly consolidated and restored with syringes and spatulas.
Nowadays it functions as a museum.
Parma is a city in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna famous for its prosciutto, cheese, architecture and surrounding countryside. It is home to the University of Parma, one of the oldest universities in the world. Parma is divided into two parts by the little stream with the same name.
It has a long history, already being a built-up area in the Bronze Age.

non hai avuto fortuna con il cielo, ma questo battistero merita di essere visto in ogni caso.
La sua architettura è originale e molto bella, come il materiale con cui è costruito.

What an unusual building! It looks like a cross between a baptistery, a military fortification and a modern block of flats, I've never seen a building like this before! Fascinating place and history, and I really like your off centre composition, allowing the red building to splash its colors into the scene too. Nice tones to the baptistery too, I wonder what type of stone this is with the pink hue?
Thanks as always

Il se tient bien droit sur cette belle place. J'ai eu le grand plaisir de le visiter et c'est très impressionnant. Le personnage nous offre une belle relation dimensionnelle.

the interesting architectural features of the Baptistry are delightful with the lady in the red top giving the image a nice sense of scale.
The complementary colours appear natural and very pleasing.
Kind regards Les.

L'étendue de la place donne de la profondeur à la composition. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails et les couleurs de l'architecture du Baptistère. Le ciel nuageux donne un bon contraste aux couleurs de l'image. Bonne soirée.

This is excellently captured building from very well selected viewpoint. The view from lover angle makes the building majestic and dominant. The light is perfect, the well balanced arrangement superb. Well done.

It looks like an amalgam of the design elements of both the leaning tower of Pisa and the Genova Cathedral. Good sharpness and the people add scale and context as well as animating the piazza. Nice warm cold color contrasts too. Have a Happy New Year!

Stephen, the Baptisteries always seem to make for good photo opportunities, and this one is no exception. They all have the same hexagonal shape, more or less, but different exterior decoration. I love the pink stone in this one. Nicely framed with the low red building to the right. Thanks.

Happy New Year to you! I hope your celebrated in style.
This baptistry was one of my favourite things in Parma, the details on the outer doors are exquisite and its white/pink colour contrasts so nicely with the orange buildings surrounding it. The wide angle shot gives us a nice context for the building and also the inclusion of the people certainly give us a sense of scale. Warmest wishes and thanks for sharing.

this architectural composition is solid and interesting, makes great use of perspectives and has fine depth. I like very much the moody colours and atmosphere, the strong and clear definition of shapes and details against a soft, fluid sky. I also like the placement and movement of the people, who vivify this timeless scenery in a discreet and calm way. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
