The Visions of St John the Baptist, a photo from Parma, Emilia-Romagna

Photographer's Note

ENGLISH: This is one of the walls in the church of St John the Evangelist, Parma. The frescoes on these walls and the dome of the church were painted by Antonio Allegri da Correggio between 1520 and 1522. The scenes are a rendition of John's Book of Revelations and they heralded the "illusionist" type of fresco in church decoration. The church stands behind the Duomo of Parma. The church was originally built in the 10th century but was rebuilt after a fire in 1498 and 1510. The frescoes in the dome were stupendous, but I posted a photo of the walls instead as the light play and the "illusionist" quality of the fresco were far more apparent.

ITALIANO: Questa è una dei muri della chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista, Parma. Gli affreschi sulle pareti e la cupola della chiesa furono dipinte da Antonio Allegri da Correggio tra il 1520 e il 1522. Le scene sono una riedizione del libro di Giovanni dell'Apocalisse e che ha segnato l'tipo "illusionista" di affresco nella decorazione delle chiese. La chiesa sorge alle spalle del Duomo di Parma, e fu costruita nel 10 ° secolo ma è stata ricostruita dopo un incendio nel 1498 e 1510. Hello Lisa,
The lighting brings an air of mystery to the composition and suits the subject well. Exposure is spot on and the detail excellent. Not a very easy situation to manage light wise, but you have proved the contrary. Have a good weekend.

Hi Lisa,

I love how you tried not to avoid that light streaming in, but use it to your advantage. We don't see all the details of the artwork, but what we see is fascinating enough: the cruel supernatural scene, the kiss (in Christianity often a betrayal) and the end of it all: death.

Yet, because the use of the light, this picture is not so much about the artwork itself, as: it's a picture of LOOKING AT artwork, catching glimpses of meaning.

Strange kindness, this Christian imagery. ;)
