Comacchio is a town and comune of Emilia Romagna, Italy, in the province of Ferrara, 48 km from the provincial capital Ferrara.
Comacchio is situated in a lagoon just north of the present mouth of the Reno. It is built on more than thirteen different islets, joined by bridges. The most important resources of these wetlands are the fish farming and the salt ponds. The seaport of Porto Garibaldi lies 7 km to the east. The wetlands south of the town, the Valli di Comacchio, are classified as a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area in Italy. They are also rated internationally important by the Ramsar Convention for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands.
After its early occupation by the Etruscans and the Gauls, when the site lay on the main stream of the River Po, Comacchio was annexed by Rome. Under Emperor Augustus, who ruled Rome from 27 BCE to 14 CE, a canal was dug to deepen its lagoon. Part of the original wetlands were drained and divided among villae rusticae.
Comacchio enjoyed prosperity under the Goths and the Lombards, and became the seat of a Lombard duchy. It owed its fortunes to its salt pans and its strategic importance to its location: when the Lombard king Authari expanded the Lombard dominion at the expense of Byzantium, he took the fortress of Comacchio and cut off communication between Padua and Ravenna. When the Franks descended into northern Italy in 756, their king, Pepin the Short, included Comacchio in his famous donation of land to Pope Stephen II, a grant later confirmed by Pepin's son and successor, Charlemagne. In 854 Comacchio was sacked by their rivals in the salt trade, the Venetians, who laid it waste in 946. Saracen raiders burned the city in 876, but despite this Comacchio slowly recovered. The Holy See later acquired the city and presented it to the archbishopric of Ravenna.
In the 13th century, Emperor Rudolph I conferred it on Obizzo IV d'Este of Ferrara. In 1508 it became Venetian, but in 1597 was claimed by Clement VIII as a vacant fief. In 1598 the Papal States again acquired Comacchio and retained it until 1866 when it became a part of the Kingdom of Italy. The spread of malaria rendered the site unhealthy.
Since then, most of the swamp land has disappeared, leaving ground for the expansion of agriculture, and creating new zones for dwellings. Comacchio was once home to a factory for sugar refining, which closed in 1988. Comacchio and its seafront Lidi are a center for tourism.

Buona Domenica,Luciano

I like this cleverly constructed composition with the two contrasting façades and the bicycle, which is a definite plus adding a touch of vitality to the scene. The lighting is most attractive and we have the added bonus of the reflections. Excellent colours and clarity.

Ciao Caro Romano,
This is a really well constructed shot. None of the features are outstanding in their own right and, yet, together, they make a wonderful composition. The colours and the textures are well gathered and the small reflection, in the f/g, seems to give a whole, new dimension.
Have a great Sunday,

simple elements here and a wonderful slice of daily life made into something quite special and artistic. Perfectly cropped and executed, full of character and a beautiful presentation. Like this a lot!
Enjoy your Sunday - Brian.

I like the light and colours of this photo. There is a fine balance of brown, orange, ochra, yellow and red. I also like the contrast of the well kept smoothness of the building to the left and the faded roughness of the neighbouring house. The bicycle is a nice detail and the flowers on the window-sill really brighten the view.

Hello Romano - The tones, contrasts and colour management here are so indicative of your style and something I appreciate about your work. Lots of contrasting textures and areas of light and shade give this composition plenty of interesting detail. A super composition in which the green bike adds a fine added elements. Very attractive shot. Warm regards rosemary

J'aime beaucoup cette composition. La bicyclette joue un grand rôle et nous fait découvrir son environnement urbain face au canal. L'ensemble est très graphique.

I love this kind of shot - the stillness, the absence of people in a completely man-made scene, the almost closed shutters, the bicycle well placed, the textures and lovely light, the colours. You made a very interesting composition of the many elements in this scene in the bright Summer light. I like the small area of reflection at the bottom, too. A very fine shot, very elegant in all respects.

la bici è un pò moderna, ma si adatta bene allo scopo.
Rientra perfettamente nella composizione, anche con il suo riflesso.
Forse è un pò sotto esposta.

I love the play of light and shadow on this, it adds nicely to the rich textures of the walls of these old buildings. The bike is a nice interesting element in the scene too. A sliver of reflection too, really nice.
All the best

A very well composed picture in which the bicycle plays an important role. The background house provides many interesting angles and lines. The whole capture is very pleasantly balanced.

What a lovely shot. when I see such window with shutters i at once imagine the sunny day somewhere in Mediterranean. Even if we have sunny days, in northern countries we do not used them. there is so much sun in the picture. Splendid lazy atmosphere. Charming composition.

Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buona serata,

what is it with bikes in photo's that make it look just that much better?
we should place a bike in every photo! haha
love seeing the white drapery on the door, but too bad the window shutter and lower window got cut off a bit.
but still, overall i like the scene for its architecture, reflections and charm.
abmdsudi (32515) 2013-08-29 3:42
Excellent textural details and contrasts between the white doors and the stone walls. Good sharpness and a pleasant side light with effective tight framing. The bicycle at the bottom right adds live and interest with fine minimal touch of water reflections. Tfs!
adores (30841) 2013-09-06 13:24
Nice scene! The bike adds a lot and I like the details such as the white curtain, the flowers, the number on the wall... You framed it well with the old buildings and even part of the reflection.

Romano. I like the way the individual elements all come together to make a very pleasing composition.
