Comacchio is a town and comune of Emilia Romagna, Italy, in the province of Ferrara, 48 km from the provincial capital Ferrara.
Comacchio is situated in a lagoon just north of the present mouth of the Reno. It is built on more than thirteen different islets, joined by bridges. The most important resources of these wetlands are the fish farming and the salt ponds. The seaport of Porto Garibaldi lies 7 km to the east. The wetlands south of the town, the Valli di Comacchio, are classified as a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area in Italy. They are also rated internationally important by the Ramsar Convention for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands.
After its early occupation by the Etruscans and the Gauls, when the site lay on the main stream of the River Po, Comacchio was annexed by Rome. Under Emperor Augustus, who ruled Rome from 27 BCE to 14 CE, a canal was dug to deepen its lagoon. Part of the original wetlands were drained and divided among villae rusticae.
Comacchio enjoyed prosperity under the Goths and the Lombards, and became the seat of a Lombard duchy. It owed its fortunes to its salt pans and its strategic importance to its location: when the Lombard king Authari expanded the Lombard dominion at the expense of Byzantium, he took the fortress of Comacchio and cut off communication between Padua and Ravenna. When the Franks descended into northern Italy in 756, their king, Pepin the Short, included Comacchio in his famous donation of land to Pope Stephen II, a grant later confirmed by Pepin's son and successor, Charlemagne. In 854 Comacchio was sacked by their rivals in the salt trade, the Venetians, who laid it waste in 946. Saracen raiders burned the city in 876, but despite this Comacchio slowly recovered. The Holy See later acquired the city and presented it to the archbishopric of Ravenna.
In the 13th century, Emperor Rudolph I conferred it on Obizzo IV d'Este of Ferrara. In 1508 it became Venetian, but in 1597 was claimed by Clement VIII as a vacant fief. In 1598 the Papal States again acquired Comacchio and retained it until 1866 when it became a part of the Kingdom of Italy. The spread of malaria rendered the site unhealthy.
Since then, most of the swamp land has disappeared, leaving ground for the expansion of agriculture, and creating new zones for dwellings. Comacchio was once home to a factory for sugar refining, which closed in 1988. Comacchio and its seafront Lidi are a center for tourism.

The oblique poit of view looking toward the bridge gives the image depth. I like the multi-coloured façades and reflections. The harsh light is well managed.

I love the colours and bright, white contrasts here Romano. A good composition using the lines of the canal and its reflections very effectively. Not a soul to be seen, what a quiet and delightful spot. Warm regards Rosemary

a beautifully tranquil shot this. I love the light and colours here and being deserted it takes on a wholly different atmosphere. Magical imagery!

A fine view with beautiful colours and a very strong diagonal. The buildings are very nicely reflected in the dark water of the canal and the bridge has become a good focus of attention in the right part of the composition. The light is fantastic too.

Complimenti e grazie!
Tanti saluti e buona serata,

Ciao Caro Romano,
This looked stunning from the thumbnail and is no disappointment full size! The composition, with the use of excellent guide lines and strongly positioned features, is impeccable. Your exposure is pin sharp and the details of colour and reflection, very engaging.
My warm regards,

It´s almost like Venice in miniature.Again you were able to benefit from lovely, moody light to create so pleasant, tranquil mood of the scene.I like the composition itself with so well lead diagonal line through the frame.Really successful presentation!

Another great view from the Comacchio. It reminds some of Murano, but less colorful.

very charming place, I like the colorful houses and their reflection in the river. The presence of the bridge enhances the composition by adding a nice geometrical element here. Great POV so that the houses and the channel bank make nice diagonals.

This looks beautiful, especially with no people in the scene, its almost like a toy town with the bright colors and the cool little bridge. I love the viewpoint you chose here!

you make it easy for us to enjoy this one.
I just have one question...where have all the people gone! haha
interesting present, and interesting history in your note. its an attractive combination of light, colors, warmth and charming bridges. nice indeed.

A fine shot to be proud off for sure and you know how to select the best angle to create the sensation; the compo is spot on with the diagonal layout along with eye catching colours of the buildings and its water reflection. The stone bridee links the flanks nicely as strong point of yet another wonder scene by the canal with those two tiny figures well seen. Congrats
Angshu (52936) 2013-08-26 1:27
What I loved are the fine pastel tones of the house facades...ochre, blood red...The perspective has been well created with the canal leading our eyes to the bridge which spans it. The reflections of the houses look nice on the mildly rippled water. Beautiful shot!
