Bologna is the largest city and capital of Emilia-Romagna Region in Northern Italy. It is the seventh most populous city in Italy, located in the heart of a metropolitan area officially recognized by the Italian government as a città metropolitana of about one million.
The city, the first settlements of which date back to at least 1000 BC, has always been an important urban centre, first under the Etruscans (Velzna/Felsina) and the Celts (Bona), then under the Romans (Bononia), then again in the Middle Ages, as a free municipality. For one century it was the fifth largest European city based on population.
Home to the oldest university in the world, University of Bologna, founded in 1088, Bologna hosts thousands of students who enrich the social and cultural life of the city. Famous for its towers and lengthy arcades, Bologna has a large well-preserved historical centre thanks to a careful restoration and conservation policy which began at the end of the 1970s on the heels of serious damage done by the urban demolition at the end of the 19th century as well as that caused by war.
An important cultural and artistic centre, its importance in terms of landmarks can be attributed to its homogeneous mixture of monuments, buildings and architectural styles as well as works of art which are the result of a first class architectural and artistic history.
Bologna is also an important transportation crossroad for the roads and trains of Northern Italy, where many important mechanical, electronic and nutritional industries have sited their headquarters. According to the most recent data gathered by the European Regional Economic Growth Index (E-REGI) of 2009, Bologna is the first Italian city and the 47th European city in terms of its economic growth rate.
Bologna is also home to prestigious cultural, economic and political institutions as well as one of the most impressive trade fair districts in Europe. In 2000 it was declared European capital of culture and in 2006, a UNESCO “city of music”. Bologna is also one of the wealthiest cities in Italy, often ranking as one of the top cities in terms of quality of life in the country: in 2011 it ranked 1st out of 107 Italian cities.

It must be 20 years since I visited Bologna and it is the wonderful arcades that I remember the most. You have captured the warm colour of the walls very well and it is good to see people in the picture. A super image of this remarkable architecture.
Kind Regards, Ann

Hello Stephen - A lovely shot here, the gentle curve of the arcade and your very good composition allows us to see the warm colored facades in a way that a straight arcade would not, I like that. Nicely detailed work brings out the architectural highlights; colours, textures and tones. Nicely done! Warm regards rosemary

Love the title! Sounds like the title of a film. Love the shot too, the sense of depth is really notable in this, and the light is magical as it falls in and creates shadows in the shape of the arches and columns. The people at the end of the curving line add a great sense of scale and life to the whole image. Great shot of a lovely place.
All the best

J'aime bien suivre du regard ces arcades successives qui portent le regard au loin. Le cadrage vertical est bien choisi. Les passants donnent une belle relation dimensionnelle.

Never been to Bologna, but know that most housess and building built with brown/orange tone of local stones, enhanced by such paint all over town.
Great DOF collected in view of the arcade, the curve along its walls added nice dimenssion.
People gave life to the scene, which has a fine clear details shown.
Have a nice weekend,

Don't these vertical come out well!
This is a fine shot of the covered walkway. The repeating arches create a great sense of perspective, whilst the colours are warm and welcoming.
The figures animate the shot and help us to understand the scale - immense!
My warm regards,

hai fotografato la caratteristica principale della città, il portico.
Ha la maggior estensione di portici al mondo, circa 40 km.
Molto bello lo scatto, belli i colori e piacevole la dinamica presenza delle persone.

I went through Bologna twice by train but didn't stop there. Love the repeating patterns of the arches here and the blue skylight creeping in at left to contrast nicely against the golden stone. Tfs and have a good weekend!
delpeoples (50623) 2013-12-06 17:37
Even in the thumbnail I knew this was Bologna. Maybe it was the red of the stonework, maybe the arches, but this city is unmistakable. Of course the vertical frame was the best choice and has been so effective in accentuating the repetitive arches and the perspective. I like the subtle play of light and shade and of course that give away colour, telling us that we are definitely in the Red City.
Sorry I've been AWOL lately, mum's been very ill.

Lovely artistic scene, the arcades are quite spectacular. Good catch, have a gat weekend.

ahh..nice arcade with many interesting details in the facade. I can almost hear the acoustics from the footsteps:) Attractive colors and light, well done!
Have a nice evening.

a confident composition, that shows us the characteristic architecture very effectively. You chose a great point of view and supported it by a well considered framing that has exalted the curvy perspective and the fascinating network of repetitive patterns. Lighting and depth are excellent and there's a wonderful palette of warm tones that sets off the elegant architecture. The people are well placed, they offer delightful movement and the colours they're wearing don't disturb the harmony of the ambiance. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Bologna is the city of arcades so of course we see here beautiful arcades. splendid shot, I like how the people meet there at the curve of the path and we are curious what is farther. Excellent composition and nice red like in spaghetti bolognese. Lovely shot.
Warm regrads Malgo
