Photographer's Note

The Bolognese church of San Vitale ed Agricola in Arena, part of the complex of 7 churches known as Santo Stefano, is purported to have been built over the remains of a Roman amphitheatre where the martyrdom of Vitalis and Agricola took place in the 4th century.

Four churches remain of the seven that once stood here. They are all linked together with corridors and courtyards.Still a working monastery, the various churches have been wonderfully restored and display the whole catalogue of Romanesque architecture. Seen here is the mosaic decorations on the exterior brickwork of one of the churches.
