Italians refer to Bologna as “the erudite, the red and the fat.”

Bologna “the erudite,” because it is home to one of the oldest universities of the world.

Bologna “the red,” because of the vivid color of the roofs and buildings.

Street after street, every Bologna arcade is a different architectural experience. Some arcades sport elegant columns and marble walking surfaces. Some peer through decades of city dust and grime that cover the decorative patterns. Others, like this one here, have interestingly colourful pillars.
