These are some of the most famous ruins in the world, Pompeii. This was taken near the Temple of Jupiter, in what was the centre of the city. In this shot you can see that some of the impressive columns were not actually made out of marble, but were in fact brick, with a facing of stone or plaster painted to look like stone. Pompeii is a fascinating site, because it is a pure Roman era city, with no other more modern buildings or adaptations. It's a huge site too, taking at least 30-45 minutes to walk from one side to the other without stopping. The best artifacts from the site are in a museum in Naples, but it's even better to walk the streets and imagine what it was like to live there almost 2,000 years ago.

The late afternoon lights helped you to catch Pompeii in a special atmosphere. You chose a perfect POV to present the Temple of Jupiter. The warm brown tones of the walls and the coloumns make a great contrast with the deep blue sky. Excellent contrast and quality.

Nice shot from this iconic location, Alvin. Good lighting bringing a warm tonality in the ancient ruins, as well as a good interplay of light and shadows. Not least a fine perspective effect from the diagonals converging towards the right side of your frame.

Hi, Alvin -
A fascinating shot, not least because it shows us what lies behind the marble. Too many tourists in the picture, though. :-)
Nice balance and use of diagonals, too.

I am glad to see picture of totally different places than the great Nature of Canada, and see how the perfection is not due to the great sceneries only but to your skills and your way of trying to get the best. I appreciate every detail in this one, start, ing from the pretty colors, the framing, theh shadows the sky and the matching bacground plus of course the diagonal.
These days I am sending some pictures because I came back from Egypt withg a big collection. . We had some concerns because I was accompanied by my family, ( 10 all together) and like everybody we are impressed by situations which may happen to tourists all over the world these days. But everything went on perfectly and the trip covering Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, a boat cruise on the Nile and Abu Simbel lasted 12 days.
Hope you're OK, friendly regards - Izzet

Pompeii, one of the most places for visitors,Pompeii is indeed a fascinating site.
You chose for a vertical perspective of the colums.
The white colums are very nice.
Thank you very much for your informative note.
What I really like here is a well composed picture with saturated and contrasting colours of this lovely ruins.
Also a lovely landscape in background.
Very well done, TFS.

Hi Alvin--It's always a challenge to shoot this kind of location. There are tourists crawling all over, the obvious shots have all been done a thousand times already, and you often can't get in at sunrise or sunset. So the only option is to make a nice composition and execute everything technically perfectly. I'd say you've just about done that here--nice warm light, pretty clouds, and rich (if slightly oversaturated) color. I hope you enjoyed Italy! Merry Christmas, regards, Ken.

The prsence of the persons has an effect of scale. The diagonal line made bt the srep in front of the colums is an asset to the composition. The point of view leads our eyes toward the mountains in the background which is giving depth to the photo.. The picture is clear and sharp. The blue sky is filereing the light which is enhancing the colors. have a nice day.
