One of the good things about visiting Pompeii in the dead of winter is that you can get shots like this: no people, no energy, movement, color; only the silent stillness remains. I imagine it was like this when it was first uncovered before the hordes of tourists descended. I was a researcher here for a bit last year, so I got lots of photo opportunities at this astonishing site.

We were there in May, very busy!
