Photographer’s Note

This is one of the more famous statues of Julius Caesar, portrayed as a victorious general, although you can see from the mixed color of the marble that its features (such as heads and arms) are sometimes interchangeable! In this case, it's an Imperial statue from the Antonine period with a modern reconstructed head of Caesar. I'm trying to find more info about this sculpture in particluar, but I think I'm going to have to check the books, as I can't come up with very much online. It's currently on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. About the museum: The museum now houses extensive collections of Greek and Roman antiquities, the core of which was from the Farnese collection. Pieces include engraved gems collected by Cosimo and Lorenzo de Medici in the fifteenth century, the Farnese cup, or a Ptolemaic bowl made from sardonyx agage, and the famed Farnese marbles. Charles III of Bourbon founded the museum in the 1750s in a building which was previously used as cavalry barracks and also served as the seat of the University of Naples (1616-1777).
