Photographer’s Note

Castel Nuovo, also known as Maschio Angioino, is a castle and a symbol of the city of Napoli (Italy) .

Before the accension of Charles I of Anjou to the Throne in 1266, the capital of the kingdom of Naples was Palermo. There was a royal residence in Naples, at the Castle Capuano. However, when the capital was moved to Naples, Charles ordered a new castle, not far from the sea, built to house the court. Works began in 1279, and were completed three years later.

Due to several events, the new fortress remained uninhabited until 1285, when Charles died and was succeded by his son, Charles II. Castel Nuovo became soon the nucleus of the historical center of the city.

It was the temporary residence of the Spanish kings during their visits to the city, when the kingdom was annexed by Spain in 1494.

Castle Nuovo has suffered several restorations, being the last one in 1823.

Castelo Nuovo, tambien conocido como Maschio Angioino, es el simbolo de la ciudad italiana de Nápoles.

Antes de la subida al trono por parte de Carlos I de Anjou en 1266, la capìtal del reino de Nápoles era Palermo. La residéncia de los reyes en la ciudad de Nápoles, por aquel entonces, era el Castel Capuano. Sin embargo, cuando la capital fué trasladada a Nápoles, el rey Carlos I, ordenó la construcción de un nuevo castillo, que no estuviese alejado del mar, para que fuese residencia de la corte. Las obras empezaron en 1279, y se completaron tres años mas tarde.

Debido a diversos acontecimientos, la nueva fortaleza permaneció deshabitada hasta el 1285, cuando Carlos I murió y le sucedió en el trono su hijo Carlos II. El Castelo Nuovo se convirtió muy pronto en el núcleo principal del centro histórico de la ciudad.

Fué asimismo residéncia temporal de los reyes de España durante sus visitas a la ciudad, cuando el reino fué anexionado a la corona española en 1494.

El castillo, ha sufrido diversas restauraciones a lo largo de su história, siendo la última de ellas en 1823.

Hi Felip,

Excellent POV. I really like the Castel Nuovo against the dramatic sky. The dusk creates a great atmosphere and it is often a good idea to take a photo at dusk when the weather is not too good in day light. TFS and have a nice evening!

I learnt something new about Napoli today thanks to your picture. Good shot under the light blue hour sky. The slow shutter speed effect on the car tail lights creates quite a contrast - fluidity vs the solidity of the castle. God work my friend!

Felip bonjour.
J'aime beaucoup ce château à l'heure bleue en léger contre-jour. Les voitures y déploient les couleurs de leurs feux comme pour une fête et les créneaux se détachent sur ce beau ciel de la nuit qui arrive.
