Photographer's Note

The port took advantage of a double natural river basin, that inner
one (today said Maremorto), dedicated to the yards and the naval
maintenance, while that most external one was the true port.
Miseno was in roman age the main naval base of the empire in all the
Tyrrhenian one. Its name, derived from the Latin "sinus militum", was
made to come down from Virgilio from that one of the bugler of Enea,
buried here after to have defeated a titano. The roman city, already
in forfeiture from the end of the empire, was abandoned in IX the
century after last of one the long series of incursions of
Saracens pirates, in the 840. The greater part of the last inhabitants was
sheltered in the near island of Procida.

In the high part of the photo, on the left, the famous CASTLE OF BAY
can be admired: The construction was begun from the Aragoneses in
1495, in the imminence of the invasion from part of the king of France
Carl VIII, to united numerous other works of fortification in the
Reign of Naples.

This zone of the Flegrei fields is known also for the activity
volcanology and sismic. A glance to the geomorfologies of the
territory and us becomes endured account that in past, these
localities have been interested from enough important phenomena. A
evident test is given from two lakes in proximity of the sea, of
volcanic origin. A thermal, warm and rich water series of beneficial
property, has made of the zone, in antiquity like today, an important
thermal pole. The therapeutic virtues of present waters in the Roman
Terme of Bay with to the magnificent panorama contributed to recall in
this excellent bathing zone, the richest and famous personages of the
ancient Rome.
