Sant'Agata de' Goti is a municipality in the Province of Benevento in the Italian region Campania, located about 35 km northeast of Naples and about 25 km west of Benevento, with a long and interesting history.
The first settlement was established befor the Roman era, and the name of the town was set around 533 AD, when a Goth army was defeated and surrended, obtaining by the winners the right to live there peacefully.
During Middle Age the town was taken by Longobards and belonged to the Duchy of Benevento. In 1066 was conquered by Normans and in 1230 was taken by the Church's Kingdom.
Every ruler left traces in the archtitecture of the city, that's rather small but scattered of churches and civil buildings of different styled, from Gothic to Baroque.
The picture depicts the Church of Sant' Angelo de Munculanis, a Renaissance building that was built over another middle age, gothic chburch. Remnants of the old church are still at their place. |
