Photographer's Note

I Sassi, the historic center of Matera dug on the side of the ravine, is a settlement resulting from various forms of civilization and human activity have occurred over time. From pre-history of entrenched villages of the Neolithic period, the habitat of eastern civilization rock matrix (IX-XI century), which is the substratum of urban Sassi, with its trenches, pipes, tanks; from the "Civitas" of matrix West Norman-Swabian (XI-XIII century), with its fortifications, the subsequent expansion of the Renaissance (XV-XVI century) Baroque and urban systems (XVII-XVIII century), and finally by the deterioration of social hygiene and first half of the nineteenth Twentieth century to the displacement provided by national law in the fifties, until the current recovery began in the 1986 Law.
