Clouds Like Waves Photo

Photographer’s Note

Ever notice cloud patterns that look just like waves in the ocean?

As you've probably guessed, it's no coincidence; air and water often behave in remarkably similar ways.

In fact, much of what describes the motion of the atmosphere is in the realm of fluid dynamics. And there are specific instances in which clouds very nearly mimic waves or stream flows, in displays that are both fleeting and spectacular.

Isn't that amazing?

Here's the type of cloud wave which form in areas of greater shear, where winds increase with increasing height, such that the waves generate a rolling motion, much like cresting waves in an angry sea.

I caught this image while returning home after working. I was so lucky to have my big camera with me.

Stella, wow, this is a fine shot, the sky is moving and you have captured it very well. Detail is awesome and the color asre alive, great capture.

Unite la dinamica di correnti verticali dà interessanti forme nuvole. Bella la luce da un frammento di arcobaleno. Buona la nitidezza e colori naturali.

Bonjour Stella,
voici un grand travail de capture de ciel et les cieux sont justement ce que j'aime photographier. J'essaye de ne pas rater les rares beaux cieux que l'on a en Belgique.
Ce petit bout d'arc-en-ciel fait tout son effet.

Indeed an amazing sky, masterfully captured. The shapes and the nuances of light on the clouds are just fabulous. It would be gorgeous even without the tip of rainbow. The presence of the tiny silhouettes of the trees on the distance enhance the sense of grandiosity of the clouds.
