Santo Stefano di Sessanio, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is a town of only 120 inhabitants in the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region. It is also part of the Mountain Community Campo Imperatore-this plain and the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. It comes from Sextantio, a small Roman settlement located near the modern town, according to other dates back to the Roman village of S. Marco, the most important plateau Aquila. The first documented on the territory of Santo Stefano occur in 760, with the donation of the Lombard king Desiderius donated to the monastery of St. Vincenzo al Volturno.
In 1308 we have the first news of the existence of the fortified village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, part of the Barony of Carapelle Calvisio. In 1474, under the Aragonese, we are seeing a strong development of pastoralism and transhumance.
From 1579 to 1743 it is possession of the Medici family of Florence.
