A classic view of Kilkenny Castle in the medieval town of Kilkenny. I previously posted a portrait shot of this same castle not realizing I had a serviceable landscape shot. Let me know which you prefer.

This castle is very accessible and very popular, so to get this view without any people around during the day, you have to be very, very patient. While I agree sometimes including people enhances the shot, I didn't feel that was the case this time. So I waited, and waited for all the people who were coming and going to appreciate the same view I show you here. I didn't mind waiting since I always need a fair amount of time to setup and meter the scene properly when I'm using my 2 stop graduated color filter and polarizer at the same time along with a manual focus point. I guess sometimes the extra time allows you to revisit all the little things you can do technique-wise to create a better shot in the field.

Once I was done with my shots, it was time to tour the castle. While all the castles I visited in Ireland were fabulous, some of the interior tours were clearly better than others. This is one I would definitely recommend touring. The interior has been meticulously restored with an amazing regard for craftsmanship and attention to detail. In fact once you see it, you'll find it hard to believe that the Butler family in 1967 sold the abandoned and deteriorating castle for 50 pounds to the Castle Restoration Committee.

Hope you like!

Doug

I've been to this place once, and it's wonderful! Your picture is great including the garden around it, with good colors! I also like the positioning of the castle.

Hi Doug,
The deep red roses work well with the lush green grass in the foreground that leads the eye to the lovely fountain and the the beautiful old castle. The green and grey contrast beautifully with red getting attention and the little bit of blue providing nice light to this delightful composition.

Hello Doug,
I much prefer this one for the complete view of the castle and the balanced composition. Clearly the front row of the red flowers adds color, contrast and visual appeal. You must have waited till everyone was out of the picture. Good work! Regards,
Hakan

both photos are very nice, but i like this one more showing the whole pretty castle and with the fountain added.
the composition and pov are very good - the nice red roses in the fg and the position of the castle to the right are chosen well.
great job & best wishes, thor.

Jolie composition qui met bien en valeur ce très beau chateau.
Amicalement

Hello Doug,
Very well composed picture, shown the beautiful architectures of Kilkenny Castle with nice flowers on fg. I like the contrast colours between the red flower against superb green and the black frame choosing make it more impressive. tfs

Nice catch in the green tones. The composition is very well balanced with the castle and the fountain. The red flowers in the foreground bring other colors. Very nice.

Hi Doug. The black frame may be an overkiil here but the view of the castle and gardens is excellent. The flowers look bright in the foreground and contrast very well with the greyish colours of the building. Nice placement of elements and sharpness. Thanks Doug.

The foerground roses work well add some interest and colour. I like the placement of the castle and fountain. I too took some photos of both Leeds and Hecer Castle in Kent last year but like you I had to contend with all those darn tourists.
Well done Douglas.
Phil

Hi Douglas
A very well composed image of this castle. The building itself is well placed in the frame and the foreground interest adds a welcome splash of colour. I like too the curve presented by the path around the fountain. Nice work.
Best wishes

Hi Douglas,
An impeccable and wonderful compo. Everything looks so tidy: red flowers, green grass, fountain, castle, cloudy sky... A great photo indeed.
The only things that (maybe) could be better are the sharpness and the brightness (I guess that the slightly dark appearance is the price to pay for not loosing every detail in the shadows...).
Regards, José.

Hi douglas,

Jolie bâtiment. Ta photo est bien composée, avec une jolie netteté.

Hi Doug,
Beautiful place, good scene. Wonderful composition with deep red roses, nice fountain and pretty old castle. Well done my dera friend...
All the best...

When I first saw this I thought it must be a re-post. Now, comparing them they are very different. I like them equally, but this one has so much more information, both of the whole castle facade and also the fountain. Your patience certainly paid off as I agree people would have spoiled this, especially at 1/10 sec there would have been blur. I'm intrigued by the colour grad. In what way did that help? (just exposing my ignorance!)
Good work

Great shot! The flowers in the foreground really add a lot to the scene, bringing colour and also a sense of depth or 3 dimensions. Good information about the interior too, because like you, I've noticed a wide variation between the quality of the castles I've visited (most are not worth going inside). Nicely done!

Hello Douglas!
Nice point of view of this amazing castle. Vivifying colors anr sharpeness is very good. The note is useful.
Thanks for sharing.
Best regards
Denis!

Doug,
I remember your previous post of this castle and I have to admit that I prefer this horizontal framing with the waterfountain in the middle providing some additional depth of field. however, again I have the feeling that you might have exaggerated on the saturation of the roses.
Regards, Peter

Hi Doug,
Beautiful view of an amazing place. Great POV including the castle and fountain and the pretty color in the foreground. Personally though I think the wide black border takes away from this sharp photo. But thats just me..:o) Nice work. TFS
