Today I offer you a proposition, will you trade me your blue sky for my blue boat?

Blue skies were a rare occurrence during my trip to Ireland. Fortunately I learned to love the gray skies. Plus, the predominantly gray and white skies offered many opportunities to practice using the graduated color filters to even up the exposure.

On this particular shot I used a 2 stop ND graduated color filter and since there was a slight mist, I also had my singh-ray warming polarizer on to saturate the wet greens. In spite of my efforts to get the exposure reasonably balanced in the field, i still needed to tweak the highlights and shadows considerably in PP.

Tower houses like the one pictured dot the country-side of Ireland as there are nearly 1000 of them altogether. Some of them are abandoned and in poor shape. But others like this one have been loving maintained so that you can actually walk in and climb the stairs to the upper stories. This one here had 5 stories to it.

These houses were generally built for defensive purposes as well as habitation. The construction of tower houses began in the early fifteenth century and lasted until the end of the sixteenth century when they were replaced by fortified houses and stronghouses.

One last thing. I had hoped to experiment with doing one of those selective color images where the rest of the scene is B&W but the boat remains blue. I think this image would lend itself well to it. But atlas I do not have the Photoshop skills just yet to do it well. But if you do, please take an attempt and show me the possibilities.

Regards,
Doug

I had no complaints about the overcast weather when I was there. You have done very well here, too, esp. with the neutral grad filter. An unusual sight with the blue boat in the foreground, and an outstanding composition. Oh, I'm ready to trade in the blue sky plus the 35 Celsius temp with the accompanying humidity in return for whatever you have there. Cheers!

Hello Doug -

Well done! Working with the elements can produce some rather stunning images. This is a simple image but stunning none the less because of it's richness of tone and saturation of color. The only comment is to maybe think about removing the telephone lines in PP. This is a keeper.

Thank you for sharing.

John

Hi Doug,
Lovely treeless landscape with a wee bit of ancient tower to go along with the vibrant blue boat. Very well balance clear colors with sharp details.
Regards, Tom

It wouldn't do you any good to swap our sky today as it's the same as this one. ;-( Using the blue boat in your foreground was a good idea as it adds a wonderful splash of colour. The grad did its job of showing some of the cloud detail. Well done
Kath

Hi Doug,
You've risen to challenge of obtaining beautiful photos under grey skies with great success. The boat and tower make balanced focal points, the detail in the clouds is excellent, the green hillsides rolling down to the water are quintessentially Irish.
The patial desaturation would be quite simple were it not for that grass at the bottom. Further, I personally don't care much for the results but you can chack out the WS for instructions.

Doug,
a nice composition with the blue boat as a colorful introduction to the landscape that otherwise dominates with the grey and heavy weather. Good trade that one a blue boat for a blue sky. It seems that it didn't work out so well.
Regards, Peter

Hi Doug. I’m tempted to take you up on your offer but blue skies are rare enough here also, the down side of living on an island in the middle of a very big sea. Nice photo. Perhaps a pace or two to the right would have put the boat and the tower house on opposite sides of the image creating more balance, just a thought. Good colour and detail. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Douglas,

I think all of us who have done the processing you speak of are trying to imitate situations like the one you have found .. It would be kind of sad to get rid of the natural I think.

I think you grey sky amplifies you blue boat ..

not to mention how wonderfully and thoughtfully this is composed,

very nice,

take care,

John

Interesting to see a boat in such environment. It does look like the boat had a useful life. The colours also create a nice contrast with the dark colours of its surroundings. Interesting subject and idea for this compo. Thanks Doug.

Roberto

A beautiful use of color, Doug, the gray skies add to the saturation! (No glare.) I like how the boat almost parallels the little creek. Both the boat and the tower appear abandoned and sad in that gloomy landscape. Picky detail alert--it's slightly unbalanced due to having both main subjects on the right side. But if you moved to the right for your shot, you wouldn't have such a nice angle on the boat. Great mood for sure, anyway. Regards, Ken.
