| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The small town of Cong, Ireland was the filming location for John Ford's 1952 Oscar-winning film, The Quiet Man, staring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald. A true classic, The Quiet Man is my mother’s favorite movie, so my wife and I surprised her by bringing her there when she came to Germany to visit. Much of the movie was filmed on the grounds of Ashford Castle and in areas around the town. This small church was featured in the film as the place where John Wayne’s character introduced himself to Maureen O’Hara’s character.
As we were only in Ireland for a few days, we only spent about a day in Cong before moving on to see other locations. The quaint little town of 200 people was very hospitable and kind during our entire stay as they entertained questions and curiosities. What wonderful people. As It was as rainy as one might expect from Ireland, so I had to adjust some of the hues to bring out the lovely green that Ireland is famous for, as well as a touch of red from the rusting iron of the church. I adjusted the lighting to bring out more detail of the stone church, as well as sharpened some of the image. I felt that the sky was just too bright, but tried to no avail to change the contrast without affecting the rest of the picture. But after I looked at the contrasts a little more, I realized that he grey of the church, and the white of the sky, just enhanced the green foliage and grass all the more. In the end I left the sky alone.
I hope to go back there one day with a better camera and a few filters to capture more of the area. Perhaps find a little sun while I'm there. |
