Photographer’s Note

McGann’s Pub on Union Quay, in Cork. There's another McGann’s Pub in County Clare (Doolin) which is well known for its music sessions; I don’t know whether the two are related. Although we had a chance to listen to some great music in The Lobby (a few doors down to the left), we didn’t have a chance to stop in here before we left the City.

Cork (‘Corcaigh’ meaning marshy place) is actually built on an island and is surrounded by the River Lee. The city came into being when St. Finbarr founded an abbey and school there in the 7th century. In about 820, the Vikings came, raped, looted and pilaged the city, after which they built their own settlement nearby, and then ended up assimilating with the local Celts. Cork is the closest major city to Blarney, home of the well-known Castle and stone. The stone is supposedly half of the Stone of Scone, which, local legend has it, Robert the Bruce gave to the McCarthy clan as thanks for the clan’s support at the Battle of Bannockburn.

Technical aspects/post production: Straightened and cropped edges, auto contrast, colors, increased saturation +5. Add borders.
