Pictured here is an old wizened tree that grows on the sandy shore of the upper Lake at Glendalough in Co Wicklow.
Glendalough is a famous site in Ireland, both for its natural beauty and extensive wild lands, as well as the Monastic City founded by St Kevin around the year 600 and mostly destroyed in 1398 by English Troops.
The valley itself was formed during the last age age by a glacier which left a huge moraine across the mouth of the valley. A delta was created by the Poulanass river which divided the lake into two, hence why there is an upper lake and a lower lake. The Upper lake is the larger of the two. It is an important ecological site with the area being surrounded by oak woodlands, in which lives a variety of plants, trees and animals. Wild deer can often be seen early in the morning, and when not long after I took this, a herd appeared in the forest. Sadly they were spooked by me and were too far away to be able to get any good pictures of them.
The lakes and parkland here are crossed by a number of walkways of varying difficulty. These are color coded so that anybody from a novice and daytripper to experienced hill climbers can choose their path through the wilderness.
As you walk through the lands here, you encounter a number of historic sites. At the visitors centre is the famed Monastic city, its ruins piercing the skyline. Here you will find The Cathedral, the Priests house, St kevins Church, St Kierans Church, the Church of Our Lady, the Trinity church, The huge round tower and St Saviours Church.
As you walk further you pass the lower lake and then onto the upper lake where the Reefert Church, St Kevins Cell, the Caher, and Temple na Skellig all wait to be explored. Some of the buildings here are among the most important and rare in Ireland for their age and design elements. One of the most important is the double arch gateway that leads into the monastic city, and is the only example of its kind left in Ireland.
Finally, as you reach the end of the upper lake, you can continue walking for another kilometre or so, and you come to the abandoned miners village. This is the remains of a village used by men mining for lead up until 1957. For it having been abandoned so recently, there is amazingly little left, and the ruins of the buildings look a lot older. There is also some old industrial machinery scattered around. Beyond this is a beautiful waterfall cascading down into the boulders.
thanks for looking!

che foto suggestiva, l'albero è molto bello, i suoi rami sono lunghi e nodosi, ma la cosa che rende veramente particolare l'atmosfera, è lo sfondo, molto tenue e simmetrico grazie al riflesso.

Hello Noel - The Fg tree makes a wonderful subject here and adds immediacy to the deeper view. I love the details and textures on the trunk and branches. Looking deeper into the scene I am struck by the small dead shrub close to the water's edge and how important it is to the balance of your composition, without it there would be a void I think and it contributes to the feeling of depth in the landscape. A shot that appeals to me very much.
Have a good weekend

An image that springs to mind when you think about the Irish countryside. I like very much the misty atmosphere and the soft light and subdued colours. The magnificent tree makes a very effective frame for the whole.

a lesson in composition this. These are the types of images that I hope novice photographers look at and think this is how it should be done, because it is a beautiful example of how to get the most out of a photographic opportunity. Gloriously idyllic, atmospheric and dare I say romantic. The DOF is perfect as is the light and positioning of the elements. I love it!
Enjoy the weekend - B.

The flat, misty light has actually done you a favour I reckon: it's muted the colours, and softened the contrast, and made you give us a welcome relief from all the über-saturation of so many others' postings I've been looking at over the last couple of days. The natural frame of the tree and the overall composition ain't too shabby either!
photoray (9815) 2014-06-07 7:07
Excellent atmospheric composition, dominating wizened oak tree, then the mirrored water with intersecting lines fading into the mist.
And from your detailed note, a worthy place to visit for Nature and history.

beautiful view of the lake shrouded in mist. It looks so calm and restful. The framing with the tree in the foreground is excellent with great photo quality as always. Thanks for sharing and have a nice weekend.

With the imagery and chosen title, I get the impression this old tree is alive with mystery and story, almost like something from a dramatic novel or suspense movie. What has it been witness too...a murder, stolen secrets, other hidden crimes??
On the opposite end of the spectrum from Las Vegas, this shot exudes the peace and serenity one would hope for after a long weekend of gambling, skirt chasing and....oh, you're right, "What happens in Vegas...." :)
Anyway, back to the picture. There really is a sense of intrigue here, the slight mist and still setting gives off a curious vibe, as if something is about to jump out of the waters and start chasing me at any moment...but I'm compelled to stick around and listen to the quiet calm in anticipation. I love the spooky cool allure this picture captures.
I think Brian said it best, this is a great learning tool in composition, and another to admire and follow. Great shot Noel, this is truly a wonderful result and place I would also enjoy photographing. Have a great Sunday.
Cheers from the Valley of the Sun,

Great notes and something special about this shot with viewer gets to concentrate on this amazing gigantic tree, the intricate trunk and the branches system majestically overlooking the tranquility of the lake. When you look at the picture it makes you want to contemplate nature aged beauty as I can almost feel the chill, depth and sense of quietness. You've have also captured the mood beautifully and nice spring colours help to boost it. Well done

A wonderfully taken image, Noel. I like the POV, the view leading to the distance under the tree.. and the tree roots in the water, fill in the emptiness on the water... well spotted and excellently taken. Beautiful atmosphere.
batalay (34573) 2014-06-08 9:06
This has to be among the best photos submitted in the past few days. There is an otherworldly tranquility.
Incidentally, a number of photos have been submitted in commemoration of D-Day 70 years ago. I wanted to share with you an extraordinary link that a friend sent me from Hawaii, "D-Day Landing Sites Then and Now: Normandy Beaches in 1944 and 70 Years Later".

This picture conveys a stillness that is most charming. The misty BG with the mirror reflections is lovely and I like the natural framing by the trees in the FG. Gorgeous photography.
Kind Regards, Ann

This is like a scene from a fairy tale. The tress frame the lake and its soft reflections wonderfully and there is just a great mood to the image. It seems like such a peaceful place.
rogerl (1526) 2014-06-09 7:22
Noel, this is just a wonderful shot, a change from your more usual shots of Irish architecture. The tree in foreground is really interesting, with gnarled trunk and branches arching over the lake. A touch of mist on the lake makes this a very moody and pleasing image. Thanks.
irek1 (823) 2014-06-09 10:47
Excellent landscape with a little bit "misty" lake. Wonderful colors and good composition are advantages of that photo. The tree and color of the "beach" are great.
nikkitta (12716) 2014-06-09 13:57
This time not a castle or ruin but a landscape very well composed and balanced with the trees, like the misty lake and reflections at the back
Good the presence of the golden shrub matching with the color of the soil
Very good work, congrats

this is a wonderful composition, I like very much the way you combined foreground and background, there's great integrity and elegance in your composition. The "waving" branches are very appealing to observe, they make superb patterns and the depth beyond them is mesmerizing. Definition is excellent on both sharp and smooth textures. The colours are harmonious and atmospheric. Such a pure and tranquil place. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

I would imagine that our dear TE friend Beverley would appreciate this scene :)
Noel...after reading your note, i'm expecting to see photos of the abandoned Miners Village! Come on man, don't disappoint me here! haha
seriously..where are those photos!? lol
I guess I'll have to settle for this lake view in the mean time while i wait :)
good idea to fill up the entire frame, especially with the white-out type of sky that we can see trying to peek through. a fine nature pic with lots of history and walking trails attached to it.
see you around

Ciao dear Noel
I've been to Glendalough twice in my life and your photo makes me want to see it again. What a magical, mystical photo, that is so unmistakably Irish. The gnarled tree, the mist, the muted greens and greys, this is great stuff. Particularly knowing what you were battling in terms of diffused light. I'm expecting Gandalf to walk out from behind that tree trunk any minute. Fantastic work, really well done.
Indrasish (2711) 2014-06-16 22:18
What a landscape!! I love your composition with this tree
in foreground.. The tree creates a 3d effect in foreground.. Background is also very interesting.. Love this misty lake, water body and the reflection of deep greenery.. Very well done my friend.. And thanks always for your beautiful note..
Good morning and have a nice day..

Hello the Artist!
This is a piece of 'well being' in your gallery, masterly captured for showing the wisdom of the old tree mounting guard by such a treasured hazed backdrop.

Noel, no wonder why this place is famous for its natural beauty!! Your picture is a small sample and I can imagine the beauty of the surrounding valley!!
a fine moment of the day to hold the beauty and to keep the mystery!!
