Pictured here is a laneway that leads to Shandon Street in Cork City. Cork is a city filled with old narrow streets, and this area in particular is filled with narrow residential streets and some impressive religious architecture. The tower pictured at the end of the laneway is part of the Cathedral of St Mary and St Anne.
The Cathedral of St, Mary & St Anne, known locally as the North Cathedral is located at the top of Shandon Street in one of the most historic areas of Cork. The Cathedral is the principal church of the diocese of Cork & Ross and is the place where major diocesan celebrations take place. The Cathedral was dedicated in 1808 and celebrated its bicentenary in 2008. After being maliciously set alight in 1820, the cathedral was fully restored. Restoration work was again carried out in 1964 when the interior layout was changed, and then again in 1996 which saw the restoration of the gothic ceilings, the external stonework and the tower we see here. Local people raised over 3.5 million pounds for the project, showing how well loved this building is in the area.
As I took this shot, one of Corks more notable spires is behind me, that of the Shandon Steeple of the church of St Annes. This is a Church of Ireland building and its position on a hilltop overlooking the River Lee has made it an icon of the city.
Thanks for looking.

Again, the light is so effective, both in highlighting the cathedral and areas of the narrow street.
The clarity is excellent in this well composed shot, which uses converging lines for depth and a great sense of perspective.
My warm regards,

Interesantan tekst o arhitekturi sa opisom, lep pogled na ulicu, fasade i kulu katedrale ...
Dobar terenutak snimka, kontrast i perspektiva, lepo pokazana arhitektura i detalji na fasadi, lepe boje.
Lepe fasade i kula.
Prijatno vece i lepa noc, sve najbolje u novoj nedelji koja je pocela, srecno.
An interesting article on the architecture of the description, a nice view of the street, the facade and tower of the cathedral ...
Good time recording, contrast and perspective, beautiful architecture and details shown on the facade, beautiful colors.
Beautiful facades and towers.
Have a nice evening and night, all the best in the new week that started, good luck.

I always thought of Cork as a rural town, didn't know about its urban aspect. You worked very effectively on this composition, exalting the character of this street through an attractive symmetrical composition in a wide, vertical frame. You draw the viewer to the spire but the details and atmosphere of the street catch our attention too. I like very much the warm colours that accentuate the perspectives, the sky completes the frame delightfully. I also like the lady placed at the converging point and juxtaposed to the spire. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Beautiful symmetty and great perspective on the colorful street. I like the splendid architecture in BG and the blue sky. Well done!
Have a nice evening my friend.

This scene reminds me of one here in NYC. In lower Manhattan narrow Wall Street leads up to Trinity Church. Of course, here in NYC there are tall buildings all around, and not charming houses like in this scene. Great job handling the shadows and strong sun. I like the colors of the facades, too.

questa foto dimostra che anche da te esistono belle giornate di sole, con ottima luce e bellissimo cielo.
Bella prospettiva, diretta e interrotta dall'auto e dalla persona.

This is a lovely photograph and it could easily have been taken in some narrow Mediterranean street somewhere, what with the colourful houses and the lovely blue sky. But perhaps the style of the church tower itself gives it away - that really is typical of such buildings in the British Isles.
Your composition is bang-on with "lead in" lines from each of the four corners. The light and colours are magical and the details and sharpness exquisite.

Beautiful composition, beautiful colors, well framed and rendered, image well done.

Hi Noel, Beautifully composed scenery. The narrow alley and the colourful houses on both sides create sense of depth to the composition. The church at the end of the path acts as a focus point. Wonderful light and tones. The man and the car are the treats to the scene. The clear blue sky gives nice colour contrasts. Thank for sharing

Bel effet de perspective qui pousse le regard vers la tour de la cathédrale. Jolie lumière et belles couleurs.

Noel, it seems to me that traveling South the architecture and the colors are always different from the ones up North..beautiful and very warm colors maybe affected by the better weather and the happy attitude of the people living there!!Also, the architecture is much friendlier to the eye and the little details and elements make places like in your picture very attractive and beautiful!
It is so nice to see your pictures accompanied by unique and marvelous notes..
every picture is a little journey to your beautiful country!!

Well framed, great depth and good management about exposure and these contrast of lights, I Like these colored houses and the tower in the focal point of the shot.

As I can see I've missed many nice photos from your gallery during my TE absence.
This is excellent view to the church and the narrow road with nice houses. I like the superb symmetrical arrangement. The light is very good, the colors well balanced.
Very well done.

Ooo eeeee! What a shot. This stands out like the proverbial dog's gonads even in thumbnail. I love the rich colours and the stunning perspective. It really is an eye-catching shot, what the Italians would call "un gran colpo di occhio"! On my monitor, the colours look especially rich, which I like. I love the converging lines and the impressive perspective and sharpness. My OCD tendencies (which are admittedly now well out of control after straightening the Leaning Tower of Pisa) would have cloned out every spot of chewing gum on the asphalt. But that would make it a little unrealistic - and just a little bit cray cray.
Anyway, have a beaut day, thanks for sharing this typical Irish street with us
mkamionka (30072) 2014-05-06 1:25
fantastic composition. I like the full symmetry here. The relatively boring street was transformed here by you into a touristic attraction. Great job!
I have been thinking about this cathedral recently. I have showed on TE the panorama of Cork with the Shandon church and I think I should have as well the North cathedral at the blue hour. I have to look for it. Perfect exposure under such difficult circumstances!
snunney (81817) 2014-05-06 4:21
Light and colours are superb and the church tower makes a very attractive focal point. A pity about the car, but that's something completely out of your control and cannot be avoided here if you want to create this wonderful feeling of depth.
timecapturer (47462) 2014-05-06 5:38
like this! A wonderfully colourful and enticing view this. A real "lived in" atmosphere here, and therein lies the charm and appeal of this shot. Love the contrast of architectural styles and this is made all the more effective because of the clarity and superbly managed light. An eye-catching presentation - like this one a lot.
Regards - B.

Superb composition with this beautiful street, whose facades painted with warm colors, gives charm to the place, great POV matching the tower with the end of the street, a beautiful tower, surrounded by a beautiful sky.
Nice color, in these natural tones.
Also both sharpness, such as lighting are great.
Well taken photo. I Like
Enjoy a nice day.

The longer i look at this the more i am drawn deeper to the 'dark' figure - such a vital element - That's the impact of this shot, collaborated by the symmetry and perspective that you have fully exploited to max while keeping focus of interest on the centrally positioned Cathedral flanked by the colourful charming old buildings as I can imagine there are lots of photo opportunities there that I can also feel that long lonely walk all the way down. You have achieved what you set out to do as this certainly gives it some cheery atmosphere. I think the stunning colors just jump out! Simply put it's a photographer's paradise, Congrats.

its so strange to see such a photo from your gallery, think about it...how often do we get to see rainbow type of colors from the Ireland landscape and from Castles? lol
don't get me wrong, its great to see this side of Ireland. and from reading your note there must be alot of history here too.
personally, i really enjoy these long persective lines and how they draw us inwards into the depths of the scene...nice shot.

Hello Noel, very beautiful composition of architecture. I love the narrow street and in the end of the street beautiful church. Impressive tower and beautiful in details. Wonderful composed image. Perfectly well done and tfs.
Best regards, Barbara

Beautiful irish colours and nice perspective lines that drive our look to the church and add some depth to the composition.
Have a nice week end,
Waylim (25182) 2014-05-12 18:37
Excellent shot. What i like very much here is the POV that put us right on the street and the perspective with the lines leading into the distance and that one person give perfect sense of scale and human element. Good color with brightness and nicely saturated but not overly done. The vertical format works well for this one to accentuated the height and depth of the scenery.

Ciao Noel, great perspectibve on beautiful church, superb sky, splendid light, excellent clarity and wonderful colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

is it only me who sees a giant butterfly over here? so colorful a street and an immaculate symmetry which satisfies even an obsessed jerk like me. i should be ashamed of my ignorance, but cork meant more a bottle stopper to me than a town in south ireland. i like how TE keeps on teaching, as always.
nikkitta (14330) 2014-05-15 18:43
Going to give you 60 points
Perspective and deepness are great and well taken with good POV
But what calls more my atention is the light managemenr light and shadows on both sides of the lane, not over or sub exposed
Composition is top with the church at the far end in contrast with the so deep blue sky
One of your best captures
Well done, regards

Like the way you composed this scene with a great sense of depth and perspective. It made the view so eye-catching supported by the lovely bright tones of the architecture. Very well managed scene with good light control and sharpness. TFS!
Have a nice day!

Another interesting presentation of Cork. Very nice colors, good symmetric composition and as always, very informative note. Good perspective and the Cathedral of St. Mary & St Anne is the most important part of this photo indeed.
adores (35679) 2014-06-15 17:48
The houses look really colourful here and it seems a very nice and quiet street also. I like the dof and the street leading us to the cathedral in background. Very nice colours!

Hello Noel - How did I miss this shot? It is so typically Irish and beautifully composed and managed that I really like it very much. I love the narrow street and painted houses over which the church stands sentinel. I like to imagine that the woman is making her way to the 'confessional'.
Super shot and I'm glad to have found it!
