Pictured here is a closer view of some of the buildings at the Rock of Cashel, Co Tipperary.
In this scene, we can see the round tower which is the oldest part of the complex and dates back to around 1100 and stands 90 feet tall. It is one of the most visible parts of the complex for miles around.
To the right of this is the cathedral with its gothic lancet windows and rose window above them. The stained glass is long gone from them. As you stand beaneath the immense stone vaulted ceiling at the transept of the cathedral, the round tower is visible through the part of the roof that is missing. Like many of these ancient places in Ireland, birds have made their homes in the highest parts and are often sweeping around the site in clouds.
Beyond that is the green landscape of Co Tipperary, and if you look closely at the extreme right side of the shot, just below the horizon, you can see Hore Abbey, the subject of my last upload. This view of the abbey gives a better idea as to its overall size and shape.
If you would like to know more on the long history of the Rock itself, please see my previous upload :
The entire complex is quite large, and what we see here is only about a quarter of the total buildings footprint. I have deliberately left out the remainder, as the beautiful detailed Cormacs Chapel is undergoing years long renovations and restoration, and is under a very ugly scaffold which is visible from almost all around the area.
Thanks for looking!

Fine view of the Rock of Cashel Cathedral, for the resolution detailing its ancient textures and construction, especially the impressive very tall tower. Apparently in semi ruin existence, yet appearing mostly intact and powerful enough to withstand the centuries and man.
Thanks for sharing,

The textural and structural details of this cathedral and tower are quite splendid. The grass makes a colourful introduction, whilst the pale, cloudy sky creates a background against which the building really stands out.
The gravestone, clustered around the base add further context to the shot.
To be honest, I think I would crop a little of the plain grass f/g, bringing the graves closer, for greater impact. Just an opinion!
My warm regards,

Another awesome relic.
and its cool to see the previous post in the bottom corner.
very clear and sharp image, all the stones are easily seen.
So is there a spiral staircase or spiral steps leading up to the top of that tower?
I want to go up it!!
Great to see the green Irish grass too :)
Keep them coming Noel!

Bon cadrage décalé de ce vieux château dominant les prairies verdoyantes. Jolie lumière.

Nice deep photo. Love the way the sky pans to the horizon.
The foreground, of course, is brilliant.

Almost 1000 years old structure and it is still standing tall and proud Wow! It speaks volumes about the engineering ability of the bygone era. If this had not been abandoned, with a little bit of maintenance this place would have looked grand. Wonderful photo from the Irish country side. Love the green rolling fields dotted with these marvelous ruins. Really a sight to behold. Well seen and taken. Thanks a lot for sharing this with a nice piece of history added as always.

this place looks amazing. I love your POV here it gives us such a great idea of this magnificent structure's setting and imposition. Lots of texture and clarity with sharp detailing. Also like that we can see the wonderful ruins of your posting yesterday. What an awesome place. Stunning!
Have a great week - B.

Another beautiful photo from your very photogene country. I like the superb view up of the castle. The nice clear light allows to see many small, but excellent details. Placing the castle in upper corner and leaving the nice green area in foreground you have created excellent balance and harmony in this superb image. You have also nicely included the old grave stones in your picture composition.
Very well done
Wish you a very nice week.

Oh, how I wish I did have a time machine to go back and see places like this in their prime....but with my inept math skills to calculate dates and logistics, I would probably be stuck in a cave somewhere with Bin Laden instead!? So, better than risk that mess, I'll just take my balloon chair for a ride over these sites and snap away. :)
Hard to believe this is only about a quarter of the grounds...my word, you could burn through entire memory cards around here! What a great day that would be though!! Love how you've tied this to your previous post, putting together a map for us internet "tourists." I'm having a tough time deciding whether to take in the foreground structure, or wander off into to the distance....oooh, hey look..something shiny...never mind. Yeah, I'm that easily distracted. lol
Seriously though, there's an immense about of fascinating things to see here, and that lush countryside is calling out to me. Would hate to mow all of this lawn however!? A wonderful sky too, which makes a delightful compliment to the entire scene. Curiosity strikes, what's the small black thing to the right of the tower, about half way up? Just a speckle of dirt on the lens perhaps, or something flying in the sky that I can't quite make out?? No matter, this is a smashing shot! Enjoy the day ahead.
Cheers from land locked Az.,
Sorry I sent the rains back, I tried to keep 'em for a few, but was eventually overthrown by the masses.

Beautiful, old Cathedral and this small churchyard around look superb together and are perfect subject for an interesting photography.
But I have to admit, for me also the scenery for it is as much important as the main subject. The sky and the grass look here simply stunning!
These green shades of the gras was the first thing, that attracted my attention(and I couldn´t take my eyes out of it for a while). And finally the way you composed the scene and how you balanced it-Perfection!
You knew perfectly how to use every space in your frame!
My Best Regards

Hi Noel, What caught my attention was Tipperary. Is it that the way to is so long long? What fantastic place. And so close you have here two beautiful ruins and this graveyard with celtic crosses. Breath taking view.

very nice the view as the presentation of this section of the rock of Cashel, with the graves in front of it to complete perfect the whole scene. The grey sky makes the grass on the foreground very effective as brilliant too.

An image well suited to the write up and very appropriate to remember those gone before us! Compo is great with good detailed backdrop for the stones and the fresh green foreground of this impressive complex with character of its own and perhaps one of the most remarkable collections of medieval architecture that you have captured to date. But the weather and the gravestones looked particularly eerie though. A fine historic sight well recorded, Congrats

Dia duit Noel
Jeez this looks so much like the buildings at Glendalough in Wicklow. Good choice the vertical frame, and you did so well to avoid the scaffolding that I read about in one of the discussions. Interesting half-half composition, I love it when people break the rules and the depth of field depicts the BG landscape so beautifully. Your sky looks great too. Every time I see a well-regulated Irish sky I appreciate it even more than I used to.
Thanks for sharing, yay it's nearly Friday

As always, you have given us a very in-depth and interesting description of this place and its history.
And, every time I look and an old ruined structure like this, I just try to dream and think just how magnificent it must have looked in its heyday. And, of course, the dedication, hard work and incredible skills of those who designed and built such a place.
You have captured this scene in the most lovely soft light which has avoided any strong shadows yet which brings out all the lovely textures and details in the ancient stonework. Your composition is lovely too with the apparently intact 90 foot round tower placed perfectly in the frame.
The light and the colours on the building, the foreground grass and the sky are all true and delightful, your exposure perfect and the details and sharpness exquisite throughout.

Masterful composition with the historic buildings presented with fascinating details along with the lovely surrounding landscape. The inclusion of the grass in the foreground is a visual delight! Thanks for sharing this beautiful picture.

Combination of the title and this outstanding composition remind me a Celtic Rock as a music style. It could be a cover for some album, for example. Excellent grey and green harmonious blendю Well seen.
All the best wishes,
