Pictured here is Blackrock Castle in Cork city, one of the most iconic and well known castles in Cork.
It is built in an impressive position right on the banks of the River Lee a mere 2km from the city center.
It dates back to the late 1500's at which time it was known as Mahons castle. Piracy was the reason for its construction, as the city of Cork then was subject to numerous pirate attacks, and the citizens of the city made a heartfelt plea to Queen Elizabeth to construct a fort to help them repel the attacks and prevent further theft of ships and goods.
Around 1600, the main round tower was built and that is the earliest remains of the original castle. Its walls are 7 feet thick which is testament to its reason for being; repelling attacks from pirate ships bearing cannons.
In 1722 fire destroyed this original 4 story building but the people of the city raised the immense sum of 296 pounds necessary to rebuild.
Through this time and beyond, the castle came into the ownership of the city of Cork and it was used as a place to hold social events and banquets. In 1827, following one of these grand feasts the castle was once again destroyed by fire. 1828 saw the reconstruction begin and the addition of three more story's to the original building as well as the construction of the out buildings we can see in this shot. At various times then the castle has been used as office space, a private home and even a restaurant.
Todays, its use is of more benefit to the people of Cork as it now houses Irelands first ever fully interactive astronomy center, hence the name of this place today of Blackrock castle and observatory. The theme of the observatory is the search for Extreme Life in the Universe. A team of specialist researchers from Cork institute of Technology are based here and they develop and expand the exhibition, as well as taking part in a number of astronomy projects.
The castle and observatory welcomes visitors and there is a fine café on site too.
It is a fine Neo Gothic castle and a nice break for anyone who may begin to tire of Irelands many older Norman castles.
Thanks for looking!

Un soggetto che ti è sempre caro e che rappresenta molto bene le prerogative architettoniche dell'Irlanda.
Ottima composizione, colori straordinari ed una luce impeccabile.

Excellent presentation with interesting and informative note. The castle looks so grand against the clear blue sky. Beautiful colours and textures. The place must surely have seen lots of drama and action in it's time. It is great that it is being put to practical use even today and that a building of such heritage and history is maintained so well. Thanks for sharing this fine picture and have a great new week.
dta (59121) 2014-02-23 9:59

Impressive view of Blackrock Castle, excellent resolution revealing the ancient textures, and the fine towers with defensive structures.
And good to hear its modern use as an astronomy center.
Must be a magical place to experience in person.

Une très belle photo de ce chateau.
Vous avez bénéficié d'un bon ensoleillement, avec un bon équilibre entre les ombres et les zones ensoleillées.

A very informative note for this beautiful castle, really imposing from the point of view that you have chosen. Also good job with the sky, whose tones make the best background for the majestic construction.
mkamionka (28029) 2014-02-23 12:01
beautiful presentation of this little lovely castle. It is really hard to show it well but you did a fantastic job. You had an extraordinary light, you selected a perfect POV to show the structure in all its splendor.
chawax (17282) 2014-02-23 12:10
I've been in Cork but I stayed just a few hours and I can't remember this castle. You had a very beautiful golden light and the sharpness is excellent. And what a beautiful blue irish sky ! Interesting note.
Have a nice week,

Good presentation of this castle with impressive towers. I like the POV, light and sharpness. Well done!
macjake (48279) 2014-02-23 15:27
showing my Ignorance here...i have to idea what the difference is between a Norman Castle and a Neo Gothic one! All I know is it looks pretty damn cool and awesome
amazing to think how its used today, must be in great shape and kept up - and its a bit refreshing to see a somewhat 'complete' castle as there are so many ruins.
and its funny to hear you write "one of" the most iconic castles in Cork...just HOW MANY Castles are in Cork! lol
thats why i want to visit Ireland and Scotland, drive a car and just see the country sides.
wicked post, story, and subject
carlo62 (22265) 2014-02-23 15:42

Kamilutka (5653) 2014-02-23 21:30
very impressive castle and beautifully presented in tighter frame. The bright blue sky helps to outline the shape of the building and some contrasting tones to the image. Very good light and perfectly managed. Superb sharpness.

The lighting shows just how impressive this castle is. I like the deep shadow areas and the contrasting well lit areas of the walls and turrets. Lovely detail and all set against a very pleasant sky. Very well photographed.
Kind Regards, Ann

This is a beautiful looking grand castle. I like the imposing space you have given it in the frame that it deserves. It stands out perfectly against the blue sky. Excellent detailing on the castle wall despite the distance. The wall to the right acts as a fine lead line to the majestic castle. Very neat capture, with perfect colours and clarity thanks for sharing.
snunney (75062) 2014-02-24 3:12
Another splendid Irish castle with some splendid Irish weather to go with it. I like the point of view and lighting, which is ideal to bring out the textures and detail in the very interesting architecture. Lovely warm tones and excellent clarity.

nice to see blue skies again eh? This shot is perfectly composed and managed, with the light and shadows bringing out the textures and detailing of this fine castle just superbly. tyro (16744) 2014-02-25 2:35
As always, you have given us a fascinating and comprehensive note about this place and also a glorious photograph to illustrate it.
No contre jour lighting this time but a beautifully lit frontage to this magnificent building, the oblique lighting bringing out all the details and textures in the stonework perfectly. There are strong contrasts in the image but you have coped with them very well indeed as we can see full details not only in the deepest shadows but also in the brightest parts too.
A fine composition wonderfully topped off with a glorious sky.
delpeoples (50263) 2014-02-25 4:24
Gidday dear Noel
This is such a pristine image, it's absolutely flawless. Superb contrast, incredible depth and sharpness, and the chromatic rendering is spot-on. I really like the warm light that has illuminated the castle walls and you evened out the shadowed areas very cleverly. Thanks for sharing this beautiful part of Cork City with us. And the idea of pirates and swashbuckling is pretty special too.
Thanks for sharing, have a brilliant day
SnapRJW (26034) 2014-02-25 9:32
When we were in Cork we only skirted the outer edges Noel and didn't see this wonderful castle. I shall have to add it to my list of 'must sees' for the next visit we make! In spite of its chequered history it looks as clean as a whistle and very well looked after. I like your composition which focuses on the three round towers and gate. Are you on holiday? You seem to be moving about the place. Nicely managed and a super shot. Warm regards Rosemary
danos (80248) 2014-02-25 11:16
very nice the view as the presentation of this section of the Blackrock castle, this brillinat day with the vivid colours to brings out the details and the architectural style of it.
I like the clarity, the sharpness as the contrast of the colours.
RhodieIke (10375) 2014-02-25 14:28
A fine looking Castle in Cork, you have captured, love how the sun catches the towers. Splendid blue sky, with wispy clouds.
Great Pov, well managed, super note about this Blackrock Castle, quite a history and well built, Tfs,
Royaldevon (23372) 2014-02-26 2:04
You've sold it me!
A definite must when I next visit Ireland!
It doesn't look as grey as the castles you previously talked about, and it is in very good repair.
You took the shot at a particularly good time, when the sunlight offered interesting contrasts of light and shadow. Such conditions really bring out the curved nature of the towers and the amazing textures of the stonework.
I like this very much.
Have a good day,
mirosu (10116) 2014-02-26 2:09
Again superb informative note & excellent photo, thanks for both.
The castle is in perfect light. The view up is superb, makes the castle really dominant. The excellent light and perfect focusing make all the nice details visible. I also like the excellent light and shadow play. Must be a very nice place to visit.
Very well done
Wish you a very nice rest of the week.
jcpix (8296) 2014-02-26 19:43
Would it be an insult for all others to say this is a "castles castle!" :) The kind of fortification that instantly comes to mind when castles are discussed, or even mentioned...this would be the style and design for the rest to follow, at least to a large degree. Enhanced by virtue of being bathed in warm sunlight, the strength and elegance of this visual is top notch!
I know I say this all the time, but it still astounds me how many of these are left standing considering the turbulent history and natural disasters. This atmosphere of a place like this must be off the charts, and how great that it's still in use! I certainly wouldn't mind taking a good look at the galaxy from this setting, especially on a nice day such as this...the weather monster on break?? ha Easy to see why this has been so popular, what an awesome shot! Have a great one. Take it easy.
Cheers from the castle-less desert,
Sonata11 (31879) 2014-02-27 8:57
I'm very sorry for my late response, but I'm recently very busy. I want to thank you so much for visiting and comments. This is very beautiful picture of medieval architecture. Very impressive and very beautiful. Fantastic observation and executed image. Perfectly well done. Like it a lot.
Best regard, Barbara
ACL1978 (6811) 2014-02-27 17:12
Hey Noel - never really understood how a stone castle like this could be destroyed by fire so often, but I'm glad it continues to be rebuilt and repurposed. Great shot of it here in the late light - the detail and light angle on the center towers especially are just beautiful. Thanks!
jhm (130608) 2014-02-28 3:38

Have a nice Week-end my friend.
Periko (1731) 2014-03-04 7:57
Interesting and informative note about this castle, Noel. Most of castles and cathedrals are from the Middle Age, but this one is relatively recent.
Good details on its walls, good light, nice sky.
ourania (21360) 2014-03-04 11:27
a most impressive castle, it's hard to believe it was so severely damaged in the past, it looks very solid and as good as new. I like very much your point of view and the way the diverse structures spread across the frame. Sharpness is exquisite, it's easy and delightful for the viewer to explore the castle visually or imagine actual tours outside and inside. The light has a wonderful warmth and the cool sky is a great, contrasting backdrop. The shadows are well defined and add interest. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
nikkitta (10418) 2014-03-06 15:30
