The roads across the Burren Uplands are narrow lanes which wind past farmland and small isolated farmsteads. Here life seems to be lived at a more leisurely pace and I got the impression of a community little changed for decades.
This shot was taken at the now derelict Carron Parish Church. Built originally in the 13th century that which remains is mainly 15th century. The churchyard is enclosed by a dry stone wall and the whole complex stands away from the road in a field where cows graze. It was evident that the churchyard is still in use, that was something I noted in all the old, decaying churches we explored; the presence of new graves. Here it seems that the ancient and more recent bridge the chasm created by the passing centuries.

It would seem that this old stone cross has stood there from some time. I like how you have framed it, placing it off-centre and setting it in context with the surrounding landscape. A perfectly exposed image with very good colours and sharpness.

glad I am not the only one that hangs around graveyards. They are such great places to explore and present some beautiful photographic opportunities. This wonderful shot is testament to that. Captivating image and what a wonderful place to be laid to rest.

This photo just stands out from this page today! Very attractive picturesque composition, I see you had good weather there, I think Noel did all what he could.
Excellent presentation of the Irish heritage!

hello Rosemary ,
This is a superb celtic cross , especially beautiful between the luminous green gras and the perfect blue sky . I wonder if it would have not been better with a slightly different POV , to place the corss against the sky (and not against the wall) . But I'm not really sure .

A beautiful shot of the graveyard with warm colors and the big old cross in the fg. Great atmosphere created with the stone-wall and landscape around it.
Very good sharpness and depth.
Thanks for sharing.

This cross and these green hills leave me in no doubt that this is Ireland. The strange rocks you have shown here before seem far away. It's a perfectly well balanced composition with fabulous colours and light.

bellissima luce, la classica croce celtica fa da splendido soggetto ed è ottimamente decentrata per mostrarci il bel panorama.

Nice thoughtful composition. It is just as much a landscape photo as it is of the cross and ruins. Beautiful rich greens and blues in the same vein as Brian's images.

An iconic image from Britain, a true symbol of European civilization. I like the colors and the contrasts, well taken.

the graphics of the image is superb!Just love the bright, vivid colors and how they contrast with each other.
But also the way you composed and framed the scene appeals to me much.Well considered and executed!
Btw.the FG is amazing-it feels almost 3D,like we could grasp the grass.
Have a nice day

That is a beauty of a cross, and I would love to know how old it is. The growth of the moss and changing color of the stone indicates it is quite old, but it has retained quite sharp detail in its carving. I love that you have presented this in this way, surrounded by that lush grass (no wonder the cows were all here, even I feel like eating some of that grass) and with the expansive view over the wooded area in the background. That in itself is a beauty of an inclusion, as you probably noticed there are not much in the way of woods or forests in Ireland.
The light falls really beautifully on the scene, lighting up every detail for study, while the amount of colors is really amazing. Between the colors in the woods, the gren grass, grey tones of stone and the beautiful blue sky with that pink tint, this is a classic shot.
If one shot could sum up Ireland, this would be it. Religion, Ruins, Crosses and grass :)
All the best

A colourful and bright photo of this old cross captured in perfect surroundings. The contrasts between the lush green grass and the deep blue sky is so eye-catching. This is exactly how grass and sky should look like. The strong light is very well managed. Great detailing on the cross and the wall. The composition is complete and perfect with the wooded area in the BG which has nice autumn colors. Thanks for sharing a nice photo.

well, I had a feeling this wasn't taken in Namibia!
Its funny to say, but I actually think the grass steals the show! The vivid greens, the lenght of them and how they're looking wind-blown takes center stage.
the crusted cross takes home a close 2nd prize :)
wonderful light and compo...all around a very pleasing scene. see you around

Ciao e buona serata

I don't know why but crosses, memorials and graveyards seem to make wonderful subjects for photographers. Maybe we carry hidden emotion as we consider them!
This is a beautifully composed shot. The cross carries pride of place, showing fine textures on its lichen covered surface. It has excellent colour and textural contrasts with the surrounding countryside, all of which is well captured, furnishing an excellent context for the cross.
I wonder if it would have been possible to squat just a bit lower for your shot. I would imagine the cross would look even more imposing were it proud of the stone wall.
Have a lovely Sunday,

a superb picture that makes an immediate and strong impression with its composition, light and colours. It's striking to see and study the combination of delicious vivid colours with a solemn theme and a setting that evokes isolation and timelessness. The naturalness and liveliness of the textures is mesmerizing. The textures, the interesting setting, the sunshine and the colours make you want to take a long walk inside the frame and explore the landscape closely. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
