Back to Ireland with this post. A drive from Port Magee to the Killarney National Park took us through some beautiful scenery and although the weather was not at its best we enjoyed our trip. This shot was taken at Ross Castle on the banks of Lough Leane which is renowned as one of Ireland's premier trout and salmon fisheries. Fishing boats are available for hire and it is from these that anglers fly fish for trout.
As I mentioned, the weather and light was not the greatest and I like Lisa who mentions how she struggled with the diffused light I found it a challenge too.
I post two edits of this shot and would love to know which you feel is better.
I really recommend you look at the shot
Here as the quality is far better than the small one on the normal TE site which loses definition when it compresses the data.

you should give out a reward for the first person to correctly count the number of boats in the scene :)
I have no idea....i gave up to quickly :)
What i do know is I enjoy the light in this shot....looks just fine to me.
the colors pop too, especially the greens and various hues of blue.
A+ for showing us a unique scene from Ireland, i wonder how mqny people come home with a photo like this one, not many i would bet.
good for you.

it is quite funny how this river has become the garage for all these boats and how they almost look identical. Well captured, especially with couple of walkers on the right to add some life to the composition.
Very bright and colorful with excellent sharpness!

I found no loss of (great)definition when posted here, and in comparison to the larger view - the pic. is exquisite and well taken from the chosen POV.
Boats in juxtaposition gave exta depth, and their colors vividly in contrast to the green surrounding.
Fine photojob, well done.

I'm afraid I am torn between the two versions, but perhaps the one with the slightly more contrast has the edge. The vivid colours sit well under that threatening sky and sort of increase the dramatic effect. The point of view is excellent and the depth quite amazing. The two fishermen in the foreground are well included, giving the scene context and bringing it to life. I like it very much.
To answer your question, I do not use a tripod, I find them too cumbersome, instead I rely on a steady hand that is much helped by the anti-vibration facility built into the lens. In post-processing, I use Photoshop - I use the shadow/highlight adjustment to get the overall lighting to my satisfaction. 14% adjustment in both shadows and highlights seems to work well, though you can always play around with the sliders to get it just right. Finally, I create a second layer and use a soft light blending option, which seems to help the contrast. Hope this helps.

I find the muted light very good for this well observed composition. I like this one more than the workshop simply because this has more depth and perspective. The brooding sky adds an extra element for the viewer to appreciate. Thanks for sharing a nice shot.

Nice perspective, good deth effect with this canal, nice coloured photo with all these baots, nice reflectionas on water.

What a fantastic sight you have photographed! Simply stunning one due to the perfectly built composition based on the great details execution and superb depth of the scene. Like it a lot! Interesting and unique post! Bravo!

like this! A beautifully tranquil and enticing perspective that is full of such wonderful detail and colours. It looks so peaceful and there is so much to look at in this fine image. As for which I prefer, I would say this one just inches above the w/s version, as it has just that little bit more drama in the sky because of the darker tones. But Hey! it is only by the slightest of margins, unless my Sunday morning eyes are still recovering from last night's red wine!
Enjoy your Sunday - B.
krzychu30 (15442) 2014-01-05 3:52
beautiful and having so lovely, peaceful mood scene!
Looks like it´s quite hard to find a free place to park:)
Something new and original from Ireland and your presentation makes the scene fabulous!
One thing more-really like the strong graphics of the image!
Have a nice sunday

Ciao e buona domenica

It is amazing what difference the resolution can do to a photograph. The version on the Beta TE is simply amazing.
Personally I prefer this version to the workshop, the light is brighter, the colors more saturated and the overall feel of the scene is much more gay in this version.
The photo itself is gorgeous with all those colorful boats moored on the river bank. It has a great perspective and an almost three dimensional feel.
have a great sunday

Salutations.
williewhistler (13535) 2014-01-05 6:30
with so many colourful boats you could easily have ended up with just a jumble, however, you have chosen a good view point and made good use of the diagonal corners to compose a fine shot that has a nice depth and with the benefit of an overcast sky those lovely saturated colours.
I also enjoy treatment of the cloudy sky.
Kind regards Les.
holmertz (39489) 2014-01-05 7:39
Parking problems at the creek! What a lovely photo this is. The colours and light are fabulous, whatever you may think, I have rarely seen trees looking so attractively green. Rain can do wonders to nature. The long rows of boats are just hilarious but they really provided you with a fine photo.
aleXundar (1256) 2014-01-05 8:01
I have never seen so many colorful boats arranged so nicely. Wonderful find. Beautiful utilisation of the cloudy sky and reflection thereof. Great depth and clarity.
Thanks for sharing such a colorful, well composed shot.
Noel_Byrne (22751) 2014-01-05 8:11
What a scene!! So many boats, they seem to go on forever, and what I really love is that the water is so calm and still, despite the very threatening looking sky seeming to promise storms and rain. The variety of colors here are amazing, and all set against the so lush green of the bushes on the embankment. A beautiful vision you captured here.
As for preference, I think I like the main post best :)
All the best
chrislo (4151) 2014-01-05 8:12
Very nice shot with brilliant colours and contrasts. You have chosen a fine viewpoint with the row of boats running in diagonal across the image. I like the way this photo draws you in and takes you to a vanishing point. The nasty weather has helped to add a nice sense of atmosphere. The brooding sky makes a nice contrast to the colourful boats. Very well photographed.
Energysavingelk (1053) 2014-01-05 9:04
a very nice rural scenery. But imagine a scramble event when all fishermen and boat owners leave at the same time...
Regards from Rhineland
npecanhuk (63522) 2014-01-05 14:03
Very beautiful picture!
The presence of the double row of all those colorful boats was a great subject for a good image and, of course, you did a great job with it!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, dof, horizontal format, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!
TFS - congrats,
adramad (36921) 2014-01-05 15:49
A lovely place and reflects good weather and light of the island, but I personally like this picture, on the other WS, well aligned boats give a superb perspective, I like beautiful green with the gray sky.
A very nice colorful natural tones.
A bright and very sharp image, despite the gray day.
I wish you a good weekend.
Best Regards ..
Mics (681) 2014-01-05 20:14
What a picturesque rural shot! Yes, I like the Beta TE version for it shows other details you may missed in the compressed version. Excellent clarity, composition and light management. Very well done, indeed!
jjcordier (75132) 2014-01-05 23:07
delpeoples (52897) 2014-01-06 1:23
Happy New Year dear lady, I hope you celebrated in style!
Well I've viewed the 2 photos on my laptop and on the PC. The one with less contrast looks better on the PC and this one with more contrast looks better on the laptop. So I truly am undecided. Either way, you did a marvellous job with it and managed to rescue what was no doubt a pretty dull sky. We've spoken about this before, but that Irish light is soo difficult. The converging lines, the colourful boats and the glassy water are wonderful elements. A top shot and Workshop. Thanks for sharing, have a lovely day, thanks for sharing.
Nicou (119421) 2014-01-06 7:51

What a splendid calm atmosphere along the canal. I love the lines of boats and the shy presence of the fishermen. Well taken scene.
abmdsudi (41936) 2014-01-06 10:06
A picturesque river scene, admire your comp and shooting point forcing the eye to establish the firm anchor points on both; the lined of colourful boats and the mirror calm water stretching the eye into the horizon. You managed the grey day really good, in fact it blends well with green and each element of the photo invites you to look a little more and wander. Love the way you've filled the frame this way just about everything to add the local flavour. As usual your usual flawless work flow is applauded, its beautiful scene full of vigour despite the weather condition. Wonderful shot, TFS
Cricri (104395) 2014-01-07 9:34

hi rosemary. your editing is delightful! i would just be tempted to throw such a bad light photo into the recycling bin, but you made it look like taken on a bright day. and the subject is worth sharing, as we see such a gathering of many boats only in photos coming from mediterranean or some other african or asian countries, you found them in ireland! the big version is of course impressive with its size, but i see no problems as well in its compressed quality on a high resolution monitor.
InasiaJones (31448) 2014-01-08 16:14
It looks like a parking lot of a busy shopping center during Christmas time... :-p))
But what a photographic opportunity to exploit these rows of boats, creating a strong perspective.
I understand your desire and struggle for a better light, but believe me, I will always find a dramatic sky more interesting than an empty blue one. It brings a lot of character to your image, while being relevant to the country and its specific weather. And despite the flat light, you have managed to make your colours very vibrant, particularly with these green that can turn dark very easily.
An empty blue sky can be as boring as a milky white one, but with all the textures and individuality of this grumpy sky, to my humble opinion, you have captured a perfect setting, with a touch of melancholy that brings personality to your image.
jcpix (13394) 2014-01-11 20:04
I've looked at each version multiple times now...and well, I just can't decide...they're both superb as far as I'm concerned! :) I understand the feeling though, we're often our own worst critics. Not only is this a impressive stretch of boats lining each side of the canal, but it's not something I would have expected to see from Ireland...and that originality factor is what really makes this interesting.
I'm sure this is a lot more common that what I know of the country, but you've presented something original and refreshing. Despite the dull lighting conditions, there's still plenty of detail, color and intrigue here. Plus, the converging perspective makes for a fun little visual walk of my own along the banks. :) Enjoy your Sunday.
KristinsCamera (2373) 2014-01-14 5:02
a super appealing photograph, i love the business of the masses of colorful boats set against the tranquil moodiness of nature. the boats seem to go on forever, and perhaps they do. or perhaps this is just a fisherman's idea of heaven that we're being shown here :)
adores (35665) 2014-01-17 15:53
Beautiful place!, there are so many boats here, and so many different colours. I like the place and the composition with the two rows of boats and the people on the bank. Good PP also, you managed very well with such weather conditions!
I guess I prefer this one!
cornejo (30033) 2014-01-19 12:52
Hi Rosemary, great view with a great view of this beautiful canal dock fishing boats, very well captured with a great pov in this great and beautiful photography. A lovely image with good sharpness, depth and quality. An excellent job perfectly done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good evening and happy start to the week.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.

I cannot resist boats!
You are presenting a very well composed impression of this peaceful place. Excellent management of the light and a very good perspective. The colors are a feast for the eyes. My compliments!
brianmcc (6095) 2014-02-06 13:14
what a fantastic place, and your picture shows it off to the fullest, with the boats seemingly stretching out to infinity. the colours are lovely and very appealing.a great glimpse of ireland.
