Photographer's Note

This is a photo of The Linesman, a sculpture by Dony McManus created in 1999. It stands on the City Dock along the River Liffey and is a tribute to the men who worked on the docks, which were once a thriving part of daily life in Dublin. It had been nearly 20 years since I had properly visited Dublin. That was in my backpacking days, where getting a cup of coffee was like finding the Holy Grail. During the time that has passed, I was delighted, but also a little bit saddened, to see that Dublin has become one of the great cities of the world, and that elusive Grande Caffé Latte is now available on almost every street corner.

When I see Noel's photos of Ireland, he often questions this "progress" that Ireland has undergone since the Celtic Tiger. Yes, Ireland has advanced in leaps and bounds, but at what cost? And are we happier as a result?

There's a song by Eleanor McEvoy in which she sings about this very phenomenon: The Fields of Dublin 4
