This is the village of Ramelton (in Irish Ráth Mealtain) situated on the River Lennon in northern Donegal, near the towns of Letterkenny and Milford. The village was settled by English and Scots Planters during the Ulster Plantation and as such, is home to one of Ulster's oldest Presbyterian churches. The buildings you see are by and large uninhabited and derelict. The building on the far right used to house the factory responsible for making McDaid's Football Special, a soft drink famous only in County Donegal.

What a superb photo Lisa. Very well balanced arrangement, beautiful reflections. You have done perfect photo work in not best light. Congratulations.

I like this very much indeed. You have known perfectly how to tackle the poor lighting conditions to produce a superb image. A well balanced composition punctuated by the yellow bollards and with some lovely reflections. Excellent photography.
Just spent a morning grappling with French bureaucracy trying to get our new address on the vehicle registration documentation. Not a good experience for the old blood pressure!

Ciao Lisa ,
Outstanding old stoned houses . The atmosphere , Under this poor light , is so strong , it seems that nothing has changed since many décades .
Great reflections , too .

I really love this shot. It is so soft and gentle and beautifully composed. The textures and detailing here are just mesmerising and the whole atmosphere tranquil and captivating. Super clarity and control of exposure and I particularly like the little yellow harbour bollards, it adds charm and a uniqueness to this fine image. Wonderful!
Regards - B.

The still waters with the reflections of the buildings and the grey-white sky makes this a "Waao" photograph.
The slight shimmer actually enhances the effect.
The low light actually helps in getting the sharpness and the brightness of the red shutters and the yellow stumps. The Blue of the trawler is a fine addition to the colour variety.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful photograph, Lisa.

amazing view from old buildings with nice reflect you captured.
Sergiom (64083) 2013-11-26 5:08
The proof that something can be done with a grey sky. I like very muche the reflection in the still water and the saturation of the colors. Very nice place.
Have a nice day
annjackman (20385) 2013-11-26 5:47
The soft brown and grey tones are beautifully interrupted by the bright yellow bollards and the red paint work. The blue boat balances the shot very well I like the reflections thatare just gently disturbed by some ripples. The whole scene is tranquil and very inviting. Technically excellent too.
Kind Regards, Ann

Gidday Eire Lisa,
Excellent historical scene, the 'senior citizens' solid classical rock architecture mirrored in the water and apparently surviving modern civilization so far. And the diagonal positioning enhances the view
Have a great day,

KristinsCamera (2373) 2013-11-26 6:21
sweet photograph, lisa ~ the reflection in the water makes me think these wonderful old stone ladies are peering into a looking glass and seeing beautiful, shimmering, slightly out of focus versions of themselves.
not that i've ever done that myself, mind you... ;)

the tones of grey and the dark skies make this a rather ominous image, and there is nothing finer to my ghoul eyes than an ominous image. The buildings have that look of abandonment to them and I imagine in another world, these would be redeveloped as waterside apartments, and painted beautiful bright sunny colors. perhaps in the future. In the meantime though, its a fine powerful shot busting with emotion and drama and the boat adds just enough color and I love it! And double bubble on the reflection too. Very cool!
All the best!

you really had an eye for the scenery. You captured this melancholic mood excellently. It is very well conveyed and felt by the viewer. The composition is excellent - as already mentioned before. A great capture!
holmertz (43291) 2013-11-26 7:40
Great reflections and very attractive red and yellow details. This reminds me of the Ireland I experienced 45 years ago. It's nice to know that not everything has changed beyond recognition in that time. In spite of the dark sky the light is remarkably good.

Lisa, my good friend Sharon from Donegal is in love with picture of yours....and I am too..for the composition, for the colors, for the marvelous reflections but most of all for this very special and unique Donegal mood...
thanks for bringing both of us back to sweet memories...
a big hug

hi lisa. it is almost unbelievable that those buildings are derelict. is the place now a museum town or what do we owe those good shapes? crystal serenity of the river contrasts with the electrified clouds, creating a perfect mirror. i expect to see the reflections to be darker, but i love your postprocessing which brings out much detail (while adding some halo around the buildings).
adidas5nb (5671) 2013-11-26 19:11
nice. really nice.love the color tones and the light.great reflections, pov and the yellow patches make the pic extra attractive.
jcpix (13724) 2013-11-26 19:39
My, this really has an understated elegance about it, I really like how this has come together upon a closer look. The reflection is the initial draw here, as with most any photo that has one, but for me it's the sparse yellows and reds that stand out so very well against the more muted tones of buildings and darker skies.
I'm certainly no expert in PP, or anything else for that matter....but is there a slight halo above the tree's there on the left? It matters not frankly, the overall result of composition, detail and light is pleasing. I always enjoy these 2-for-1 images, right side up or upside down, it makes for an interesting and attractive image.
I especially like the small grouping of people just off center...which is good, because otherwise they'd be swimming!? :) Great textures too, those old walls sure have some character.
Take it easy mate. All my best from Az.,
ifege (10275) 2013-11-26 22:06
A beautiful but sombre view of decay. It looks like it is just waiting for someone with plenty of cash to get it moving again and build on the obvious waterside character of the place.
jjcordier (77870) 2013-11-26 22:48
Jolie photo!
SnapRJW (31623) 2013-11-27 1:49
Hi Lisa - I recall you mentioning how difficult you found the light in Ireland, in this shot there is no evidence of that at all. You have good contrasts and the spots of colour are not overly saturated. I think you have the mood just right. As to the composition, it is evocative and lovely with good use of the reflections; they are soft and dreamy. You found beauty in the scene. Lovely work. Warmest regards Rosemary
krzychu30 (15510) 2013-11-27 2:04
the buildings look still in quite good shape, even if they are uninhabited and derelict. And definitely they have its own, unique charm(especially the first house on the right with red shutters and doors appeals to me much)
But what I like the most about the picture is its mood-quite gloomy thanks to the grey, cloudy sky,but still so captivating because of the lovely reflections.
macjake (58956) 2013-11-27 6:36
see...when you and Tosca are at the beach photographing rocks and shorelines, i'll be here trying to break into the door or window of any of these derelict buildings :)
these guys looks pretty crusty, like they could use some sandblasting or something...but thats just how i like em.
even that boat in the water looks like its had its best days behind him. and the boat looks sort of sunken in the water too, in a funny sort of way.
great reflections, great subjects, fine post!
Off to work!
emka (82678) 2013-11-27 7:04
ciao cara Lisa,
The two further building seem indeed abandoned but the house where a group of tourists stan, it looks renovated. Beautiful reflections, as Deniz noticed they should be darker than real image. These boats look like taken from a far north. this all look rather gloomy. Superb moody shot.
mkamionka (31525) 2013-11-27 8:03
very dark atmosphere, the houses are quite grey and so is the sky. Yet the picture is very impressive. The reflections are a real highlight making the overall geometry eye catching, Also the sky even if rather depressive is very well exposed having some features and that changes a lot. The blue boat adds a nice colorful touch here.
Compare with my photo also from Ireland HERE.

Ciao cara Lisa,
What a very fine photograph and an interesting and informative note to accompany it! Curiously, I don't think that camera club judges (a very weird breed of people) would give this top marks (and I mean that as a compliment) but, together with your note, this makes a perfect upload for TE where we can not only appreciate fine photography but also learn a little something about this wonderful World in which we live.
The weather has not been overly kind to you here but it has given you some very soft light and you have made the very most of that. Little or no wind has also contributed to the glorious reflections on the very calm water.
I love your composition with the quayside and its bright yellow bollards leading the eye to the boats on the left and with a little group of people perfectly placed. The soft light brings out the bright colours of doors and windows which stand out beautifully against the rather drab stonework, your exposure is spot-on and the details and sharpness are exquisite, especially when viewed at full size.
abmdsudi (44966) 2013-11-28 7:06
Excellent scenic capture by the river side with fine color, clarity and as beautiful as blue sky day, I quite like the grey that's god gift, isn't it? The still waters provide for wonderful almost mirror reflections and great placing of the camera with the length of exposure is just right. I feel somehow the use of colour makes the state of the derelict buildings look all the more strong in shape. Love the pecks of vivid colours here there to strike and complete the compo. That's one very fetching image and a pleasure to behold. Congrats.

Great shot of the old houses and very well captured. Excellent POV and perspective, beautiful colors and light, good sharpness.

Ciao cara Lisa,
Complimenti!
Un caro saluto amica mia,
danos (88913) 2013-12-02 4:23
very nice the Autumn atmosphere of this section of the village with the reflections of the contructions on the calmly surface of the river's water makes the image even more effective,as adorable too.
The moody atmosphere enhance the beauty of the place as the clarity of the scene.
ikeharel (60451) 2013-12-02 4:43
Old houses along the jetty, and the boat anchored(and one parked...), gave excelent depth to the compo., and the long shutter provided extra smooth water to the already beautiful reflection.
Cloudy sky backdrop to grey/brown houses, but in fine harmony.
Marvelous shot of rural N.Ireland, I was intriguid and looked it up on Google-map.
ChrisJ (101844) 2013-12-02 7:42
Stunning symmetrical reflections in the mirror like water with attractive soft pastel colours & a pleasant diffused light. Good sharpness and the cut door at right does not bother me at all! The blue boat contrasts well against the repetitive yellow bollards along the waterfront. Tfs!
Romano46 (18472) 2013-12-03 11:22

Belle journée a toi
ourania (34513) 2013-12-09 10:56
Hello dear Lisa,
a very lovely and very melancholic view. I like very much how the whole composition is built on a single perspective that draws us across the frame. The stone buildings look mysterious and intriguing, their reflections are attractive and may also consist a metaphor of their fate. The people, the boat, the bollards and the trees bring in a sense of vividness. The atmosphere is subdued but captivating thanks to the way you captured and used the even lighting and the eloquent mild colours. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, take care,
adores (39256) 2013-12-14 5:21
Somehow, I guess the dark sky even helped here. A great pov! The reflection of the old houses on the water is so nice with the red and yellow colours. Guess the weather made the place even more magical!
Didi (58088) 2013-12-17 16:16
Very good Irish ambiance and good lights balance with clouds, the sky is not washed
Nice deep foreground
