This is a wider shot of the grave monuments at Ardmulchan Cemetery, a site approximately 3 miles outside Navan, Co Meath on the Slane Road.
At this place can be found a ruined church consisting of a belfry and church building measuring 78 feet long. This is situated in an ancient graveyard, and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. The church was built in the 12th century, and the last mass was celebrated here in 1613.
Its position high on Ardmulchan hill offers beautiful views over the nearby River Boyne, and down through the Boyne Valley. The cemetery features some unusual memorials including a rare trapezoidal tomb with a highly ornate cross.
A historical journal known as the Annals of the Four Masters records that in 968 a battle took place here between the King of Dublin, Olaf Cuaran and the O Neills. The Dublin Norsemen won this battle.
As well as the church and cemetery filled with unusual stones, this area is littered with areas of historical interest.
The area is home to numerous megalithic tombs, ring forts and fortified medieval buildings.
The feeling at Ardmulchan church and cemetery is one of true abandonment, it sits at the end of a narrow road and to find it, you must know where to go as it is not signposted. This is despite its very prominent location which allows it to be seen for miles around.
The graveyard features finely carved statues, temple style memorials and traditional Celtic crosses. The ruins of the church are littered with rubble from its collapsed walls and you can easily find the finely carved stone window tracery, now shattered and lying on the ground.
Thanks for looking.

Hi Noel, great choice of the moment to take a pic there, the God lights in the sky over the tombs,so bright and so well exposed, makes the difference.Great perspective and colors too,i like it!! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

hi noel! the place looks so old, and it already truly is (wow, serving back between 12th and 16th centuries, that is old!) if one day i ever made it to ireland, graveyards would be the places to visit first, together with the old abbeys.
and what a great subject for b&w photography! regarding your affinity to b&w, i guess you would also do great with this one (i mean not only the desaturation of colors, but arrangement of curves, contrast and highlights included)

Hi Noel, pretty picture of this interesting old cemetery, with a dramatic sky, very well captured in this beautiful and interesting picture, with good sharpness, light and color. Very good job well done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this interesting work.
Good night and happy Sunday.
Best regards from southern Spain.

Hi Noel - I like the way you have composed this with the gently rising land littered with a variety of broken and intact grave stone some of which are projected against the dramatic sky. You have captured the feeling of abandonment convincingly and yet the bright burst of light in the sky seems to be a positive sign. As always dear Noel a fine note. Warmest wishes from a very hot Windhoek Rosemary

Hello Noel ,
A light and a sky that create a special atmosphere , in this quite mysterious cemetery .

nice the panoramic view of the old grave monument cemetery, with the moody atmosphere to do the scene very effective.I like the way the graves are spread in the area as the good presentation.
Have a good weekend,Danos

a comprehensive and interesting upward point of view that gives us a thorough idea about this antique, abandoned cemetery and its present condition. There's great depth and the textures come through with precision. Grey, green and blue tones are moody and make the view look suggestive. The warm light seems to be moving in the sky, it's very attractive and dramatic but at the same time its warm glow renders the setting less gloomy for me. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Good idea to present us such a theme: abandonment cemetery. All the picture has a perfect harmony and a peaceful atmosphere. Well done!

Appealing for the antique cemetery's tombstones and monuments in varying states, and enhanced by the sun breaking through the heavens.
Hopefully the entire site is protected. In America, unprotected and unguarded cemeteries are very suspect to vandals and treasure seekers.
Hope you weekend is enjoyable and rewarding,

I like the way you have composed this, making effective use of the gravestones, to set the mood on the way to the focal crosses and tall archway.
The sky plays a great part in this shot, adding the sense of drama.
I'm not sure if it would have been possible but wouldn't it have been amazing to have that tall cross, on the right, silhouetted against the light part of the sky!
Have a great Sunday,

molto interessante e ben fotografato questo sito, bello anche il cielo, con i suoi diversi colori.
Queste tombe sembrano molto dissestate, un ottimo luogo per Halloween.

It looks the perfect time of day to capture this cemetery; the atmosphere is quite palpable. Well framed with the two taller monuments making good bookends. Excellent light management.

This place looks extremely magical! Almost like a movie scene or something:) the light built an unique and moody view on the historical tombs. Superb level of details achieved. Like it a lot! TFS!
Have a nice day!

I like the low viewpoint. An excellent photo in very good light. There is a superb balance between the nice, dramatic sky and the grey tombs. You have selected outstanding tight crop eliminating any unwanted distractions. Very well done my friend.

The old graveyards in Ireland are truly attractive indeed. Very fine example here in a gorgeous light and with an interesting brooding sky.
have a great sunday
Highmountains (2672) 2013-11-10 8:03
Excellent colours and a sense of sprawling width has worked wonders for this photograph. Patches of black and grey tombstones - each encircled by a strip of brown yellow grass - and the wonderful sky with low light makes this such a wonderful photograph. The large patch of grey cloud at the center with blue on either side and the multiple crosses along the horizon does enforce a sense of brooding.
You have clicked some very colourful and fascinating skies in the past few posts...
krzychu30 (15510) 2013-11-10 8:13
the cloud formations and the way they are illuminated by the sun create here unique mood of the scene, which now seems to heve something mystic in itself.
It´s not been in service for more then 400 years,so we can clearly see impact of time on its condition. But in my opinion the time has also made it looks much more picturesque.
Brilliant composition my friend!
Wish You a good week ahead

Another view of cemetery with fine colors and high resolution, splendid sunset light, green lemon color, a beautiful historical and patrimonial site, all the best, good evening

Your note is fascinating, as always. I have a photo of the friary in Donegal Town where the Annals of the Masters was written, so am intrigued to find reference to it here, outlining events that took place many hundreds of kilometres away in Meath. Your photo illustrates you note superbly and you did really well with the difficult light conditions. The gravestones have been illuminated very well and the sky still has it's dramatic colour. A spooky place indeed not just for the graves but when you try to picture the momentous events that occurred on this very spot.
Great shot, thanks for sharing
mkamionka (32937) 2013-11-11 8:14
very atmospheric cemetery composition here. As sad as it is the fallen tombs make a photogenic motif. There are so many of them here. The light very difficult but handled so well by you was turned into your advantage.
I would title it "the end of the world".
Very well done,
Kugart (1778) 2013-11-11 12:06
Nice upward view of the old Cemetery with the old headstones randomly positioned around it. A lot different than modern day cemeteries with all the graves and headstones arranged in neat rows and of a standard height. Nice sharp picture Noel with lovely atmospheric sky.
All the best.
nikkitta (17018) 2013-11-11 13:44
Graveyards so old, scatered tombs on the grass with an storming sky, an interesting place to be and capture as you did from the low part
Well done because this way some tombstones ( saw a celtic one at the left) are in contrast with the sky
Have a great week

Intéressante atmosphère avec cette luminosité qui traverse les nuages, bon cadrage avec ce cimetière et ces tombes en premier plan.

Great composition and well balanced to keep it simple and it has got me really thinking.... with interesting detail and a good range of tones of tis old cemetery. I like the perspective & good lead and the dramatic sky - really suits the subject matter. It's beautiful moody and freaky shot well shot, Congrats
macjake (62350) 2013-11-14 1:08
another wonderful subject.
gotta come back here for some spooky misty lighting and atmosphere!
love the sporadic placement of the tombstones. its looking very disorganised, thats the best way to have a cemetery - for photography anyways.
very cool indeed.

Seems a really interesting place, so full of mystery! I like this pov a lot, showing the old tombstones and crosses, many of them almost falling on the ground. The sky adds a lot of atmosphere to the place!
Indrasish (2931) 2013-12-03 21:57

Noel, it may be a feeling of abandonment but this place exists to remind that they are "gone but not forgotten"...
The fact that is located higher on the hill is very significant not so much for the panoramic views as of the importance of the freedom of the souls!!
It is very nice to see your pictures from Ireland!!
