Back to our walk alongside the river Liffey in Dublin. It’s hard not to be impressed by the elegance Samuel Beckett Bridge. Linking the north and south sides of the city, the bridge immediately evokes the idea of a Celtic harp a symbol of Dublin and Ireland.
In this shot, the striking design of the Dublin Convention Centre can be seen through the harp’s strings.
Dublin City Council commissioned Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava - the world's leading bridge designer - to create the Samuel Beckett Bridge. The brief called for ‘a landmark structure of unmistakable modernity and with a unique character that would provide a symbol at the maritime gateway of Dublin, similar to the manner in which the Ha'penny Bridge has become an icon for the city'. A Graham Hollandia joint venture constructed the bridge superstructure in Rotterdam. The bridge was delivered to Dublin on a 90m by 26m barge. The 628-mile journey took five days. The entire project cost €59.95 million. Funding came from Department of the Environment Heritage and Local Government, Dublin City Council and Dublin Docklands Development Authority. The bridge is 120 metres long, with the curved pylon 48 metres above water level. It is cable-stayed and rests on a reinforced concrete support pier which has been constructed in the River Liffey and on abutments behind the existing quay walls. It has four traffic lanes (two running north and two running south), cycle paths and footpaths and weighs 5,700 tonnes. The bridge can rotate through an angle of 90 degrees to facilitate maritime traffic.

A bridge with a real touch of class I would say. Yu have framed it very well in deed with the convention centre in the background offering excellent contrast in tones and lines. Superb light and colours; exceptional clarity.

Hello Rosemary ,
The so well recognizable Calatrava style ! (that i've discover on TE) . The modern dublin looks now like the modern Valencia ...
Excellent capture , with beautiful contrasts in the perfect blue sky .

this is a lovely shot of the most elegant of bridges enhanced by the innovative design of the Convention Centre in the background and the clearest of blue skies.
Pin sharp throughout it`s a lovely shot.
Warm regards Les.

an impressive and elegant structure and captured superbly by you. I love your composition here and the light is just flawlessly managed to bring out such clarity and exquisite detail. Blue skies in Ireland too, an added bonus. Excellent!

Nice symbol for Dublin, what fantastic & modern architecture of the bridge against the dark blue sky and impactful shot with fantastic colours, perspective and sublime light. The beautifully design bridge suggests it is sponsored by Guinness! reminds me of a harp but this looks very imposing must be screaming at you and temptation to capture is a hard one to resist. The beautiful white in particular giving this a real boost and the added colour in the background is a real bonus. Your approach which is always a winning formula! Top notch, Congrats

This is a wonderful combination of modern architecture and the use of symbolism, the reference to the traditional Celtic harp and its strings.
The blue sky is a perfect background for this elegant white bridge and the view of that modern building through the 'strings of the harp' is a great added value on this picture.
Best regards, Paul

Lovely POV of those impressive structures. Some people are know what they are doing with those shapes and materials. Good catch.

Ce pont est remarquable et permet des images très graphiques comme celle que tu nous offres aujourd'hui. La lumière est l'autre atout de la photo.

One of Dublins new icons, and your capture of it is superb. The white bridge on the blue sky looks brilliant, and is a scene worth preserving forever, as its not seen very often. I love how it seems almost as if the strings of the harp are holding the convention centre in place, which makes sense given the strange design of the building. The image is pin sharp too, so crystal clear and with beautiful colors. Thanks for sharing yet another beautiful capture.
All the best

I lived in Dublin for 3 years and so many times I have attempted to take a photo of this bridge, always not entirely satisfied.
I amy have some night photos, let me check... SEE HERE.
I remember even having a TE meeting there with darek1978 but we did not take anything interesting I believe. We were exactly talking about using the barel of the Convention Centre to be squeezed between the arms of the harp.
Perfect work here. Very clean composition with interestiong elements only. Dublin may appear as an elegant and modern town while seeing this photo.
The weather luckily for you not very typical for Dublin :)
It is really interesting to see a familiar place throught the eyes of a visitor.

Spectacular shot of this bridge in Dublin. Like the way you have composed the picture with the convention centre in the background. The clarity and lighting is superb and what a beautiful blue sky you got in Dublin. I have seen this bridge before once when I was taking my daughter to a concert in the nearby O2 arena but unfortunately did not have my camera with me. This post makes me want to book a trip there in the near future.

Marvellous graphism of the Celtic harp themed bridge against the blue sky with impeccable sharpness and good framing and composition. The blue and white colours go well together. Nice reflections in the water with ideal density levels and contrasted light. The shape and decking seem to point from right to left and create a visual flow across the image. Tfs!

The bridge is very photogenic with these lines and curves, and you captured it with excellent colors and sharpness! The perspective is also perfect! Wonderful composition! Very good job!

It's good to see that some places can compete with the originality of Barcelona! This is quite a bridge! I like how you have emphasised its elegant, curved lines so guide, swan-neck fashion, across the frame, where the impression changes to one of a harp!
You had lovely weather. The blue of the sky and water is delightful!
My warm regards,

Gidday dear Rosemary
I'm sitting here at Dublin Airport waiting for my flight home, and this brings back lovely memories of my short time in Dublin yesterday. Elegant indeed, this bridge is a masterpiece and your photo is beautifully lit and composed. I trust you had a lovely time with Noel in Dublin and also touring about the Emerald Isle.
Chat soon, I'll be back in Sydney in about 24-26 hours :)

What immediately struck me about this tremendous architectural shot was the simple lines that are not confused by distracting elements. Everything in view contributes to the well organised composition. The plain blue sky is perfect to show off the 'elegant lines'. In addition the base of the picture has those gorgeous reflections. Pin sharp and beautifully exposed.
Kind Regards, Ann

I especially like the parallelism of the building and the pillar of the bridge!
Truly elegant, like a harp!

I found this photo "pinned" on my browser. When I run out of my daily quota to critique (or find myself nodding off at the screen, unable to type another single letter), I open the images I like in separate tabs and shut down. Next time I open up Chrome, hopefully, I have a fresh, unused quota or more energy to critique them.
The one disadvantage to my method is that most often, I will forget what in particular I liked about the image when I first saw it. This one, however, does not have a fleeting beauty. It is a very skillful rendition of a beautiful architectural structure, one I saw for the first time through this photo. The deep blue sky provides such a nice background for the off-white and beige structures. The whole photo (the structures, the POV, the framing) oozes with elegance. TFS!
