at the weekend i took part in a 'twin peak challenge' to raise money for Praxis Care, a mental health and learning disability charity based in northern ireland.
on day one we climbed carrauntuohil, the tallest mountain in ireland, and on day two we travelled to newcastle in county down, and climbed slieve donard, the highest mountain in northern ireland.
this picture was taken on the way up carrauntuohil, in county kerry. it had been raining fairly heavily at the beginning of the walk, but as the day progressed, the clouds began to break up and the sun's rays illuminated parts of the landscape in dramatic fashion.
below is curraghmore lake, and beyond this are the various peaks of the macgillycuddy's reeks mountain range, situated in the centre of the 'ring of kerry'.

Seems like you are an amazing landscapist. You are doing a heck of a job pn the pp as well. It does not seem like it was the ideal light for this shot but you've brought it to life with proper exposure settings and pp.
And the place looks really pretty. Helps that you live in such a pretty place!! So easy for you irish to shoot nice landscapes!! Just kidding!

So we have (both posted mountain shots today!). Your title is entirely apposite, as what attracts my eye first is the beautiful contrast between the shadows and the sunlit highlights. Perhaps I should have posted the colour version after all...

Wow, I am impressed you climbed both Carrauntuohil and Slieve Donard, I heard these are hard mountains (in particular Carrauntuohil). A great POV here and a wonderful light. I love the shadows of the clouds on the green mountains. I love too how the lake shines.

this is another one of those 'wow' type of photos from your recent hiking series :)
your hiking has led to wonderful photos.
this may be one of your best.
Looks like the beacon of light is coming down from the heavens to highlight the lake.
the landscape looks rugged but beautiful.
captured very well!

A beautiful shot which could just as easily have been taken in Scotland where the weather is just as unpredictable as it is there in Ireland and the scenery similarly stunning.
The lighting here is absolutely beautiful and you have made the very most of it with your relatively long exposure and your expert use of a ND graduated filter. I love the play of light and shade on the mid-ground mountains afforded by the shadows of the passing clouds and the reflections on that glassy lake below are stunning. Excellent depth of field with everything in sharp focus from the nearest blades of rough grass to the peaks of the distant mountains.
And, of course, perfect exposure, gorgeous vibrant but natural colours and, as always, exquisite detail and sharpness.
P.S. And, of course, very well done for doing these two climbs for a well-deserving charity - and also very well done for carting along a heavy DSLR and a tripod with you too! Do you carry a lighter tripod for trips like this?

Hello Brian, Wonderful landscape image with strong contrasts as your title suggests. What a feeling to be standing on top of the mountain looking down upon such a glorious scene. You have managed the light perfectly. You toted your tripod to the top of the mountain with you? That is a dedicated photographer.
Have a great day,

A marvellous landscape shot, with thrilling interplay of light and cloudshadows. You must have done some very judicious processing to get this result, with the excellent detail in the sky and the sharpness of other things like the faint ripples on the pond, with its lovely reflection of the sky. The whole thing conveys a great sense of space and the prevailing weather conditions which you described in your note. I guess the ND grad was a help here, and you used it very well.

Wow!!! Very beautiful composition of this amazingly beautiful panorama. I'm sooo impressed of its beauty. Fantastic management of light, colors, sharpness, super clarity. Perfectly well done with fantastic POV and DOF too. I really love it. Awesome job. Thanks for sharing.
All the best,

Wow, this is just stunning. The little lake on the left looks like someone's put a mirror right in the middle of the landscape, its silvery tones are magical. This type of landscape reminds me of the Black Cuillins in Skye, Scotland. It's so wild and untamed, you really have captured that sense so well with sensational control of light and texture. Great job, another cracker.
Cheers and happy Friday
PS: Thanks for your note on Praxis, which has made me go and Google to learn more

Stunning capture of a beautiful scene. You have placed the shimmering silver lake beautifully and the ribbon of trailing water leads the eye further into the image. The highlight though has to be the fabulous play of light and shadow. Great work and a very worthwhile cause you support
Have a great weekend

There is something utterly incredible about the light when it appears before, or just after rain. It is amost irridescent. You have captured it to perfection on an equally incredible landscape. I love the use of the f/g slope, which helps to achieve that sense of depth.
Excellent light and shadow, revealing the strong contours of the land.
Have a lovely w/e,

Sometimes I think we photographers like to torture ourselves. We get up early, we stay out late, we go out in the rain, we hike to desolate locations all in the name of a photograph with emotion and mood. And you are rewarded for such behaviour with this shot, the outstanding play of light which add flavour to this shot with wonderful layers of hills in difference shades and tone in the backdrop with lots of foreground elements. A special moment intensified by the illuminated lake and sheen on the water. The hues of warm tones are nicely cought, and the wonderful grey clouds have much to offer here which look quite threatening though. It's a great location to shoot, simply awesome timely registered. Well done, Congrats
mkamionka (38323) 2012-09-06 13:47
although I lived in Cork and visited Kerry many many times I have never really climbed the mountains which I sincerely regret especially seeing your photo.
It is a spectacular view with the lake adding so much interest here. The light is fantastic with the clouds creating an incredible atmosphere, effect well enhanced by ND grad filter.
baddori (20151) 2012-09-07 23:32
The heath English, Irish hills, the beautiful Scotland.
This green so dear and nationalistic, is present in all its forms, depth and clarity in a beautiful light against the sun with well-managed
Thanks and regards.

I like the shade and light and how you used the filter to add the detail in the sky. A classic composition in many ways. It reminds me so much of North Wales where I spend a fair bit of time walking around Snowdonia. The trouble is it's always raining in North Wales when I go so I don't have any sunny shots like this!
Have a great day
Noel_Byrne (32070) 2012-09-16 9:39
Brilliant capture, the finest I've seen of these mountains. The lake is like a little puddle of liquid silver, and the light is fantastic. Great sense of heoght too, and the lush beatiful greens of Ireland. Magical.
mjdundee (4663) 2012-09-25 2:31
This sounds like a very breathtaking trek - in all respects.I can almost smell the rain in the fresh air there. A perfect compo and well deserved shot after carrying the camera all the ways up and down for a fund raising project. Thumbs up. TFS

wow, absolutely stunning landscape with the patches of sun light between the clouds - exactly what I love best in the pictures.
