Go n-éirí an bóthar leat.
This is Glenveigh, one of the many national parks in Ireland's northern most county, Donegal. Obscured by the bushes on the left is Glenveigh Castle, which is open to the public during summer and has a magnificent garden with impressive wildlife such as deer, falcons and wild boar. This photo was taken at about 7am on a very chilly winter's morning. Brass monkeys weather for sure. The light was quite difficult as the right half of the frame was in sunshine and the left half was in strong shade.

Ah, ha, so a pikkie from hubby's land! I was intrigued by your note too - very interesting. You might also be interested in reading either this or this for the origin of your little phrase. Whatever, this picture is the canine oval glands!
Despite what you say in your note, you have managed the light here remarkably well. Although the main light is illuminating the mountains on the right, there's still lots of fine detail in the deepest shadows and even the brightest parts of the sky are not overexposed.
Good composition too and a lovely atmosphere with the distant hills bound in mist. The little sprinkling of frost or snow in the nearest foreground is just the icing on the cake.

The lighting was indeed difficult but you have managed them very well, extracting detail in the shadow area with only a hint of over-exposure in the sky. The colours along the right hand side are particularly appealing whilst the foreground vegetation gives the image great depth and contrast nicely with the misty background.

fascinating landscape you shot, cloudy mountain is very nice.

Seeing this lake on difficult light as noted, I can imgine how it would shown on a bright midday shot, Lisa.
Also one can listen carefuly and hear the wind whistle with it's echo's...
Fine nature's scenery, I grasp how cold it was.

As I can see, you travelled a lot. This is where I always wanted to go to come back with that kind of picture. The scenery is spectacular.
Have a nice day

Hello Lisa - Is that a dusting of frost I can see in the FG? Brass monkeys indeed. I love the light and the way it bounces of the mist and low cloud; soft and diffuse. I think the exposure works well with the RHS just being touched by the warm sun and the LHS in shade. There is detail in the shadow and your shot has captured the feel of a winter's morning with a soft winter light. No camera shake despite the chattering teeth! Lovely landscape. Warm regards Rosemary
PS Thanks for the b'day greetings

excellent this seascape view with the salmly surface of the water to spread all over it leadin the eye on the far end of it.The morning colours and the difficult contriol of the light makes the scenery unique.

A superb Irish landscape with good sharpness & soft pastel colours. Good diffused lighting & well composed. Love the contrasted light, graphism & superb shadow detail. You got impressionist reflections! Tfs!

a cracking landscape taken from an excellent viewpoint to make the most of it. great foreground leading to the lake, with the amazing layers of mountains stretching into the background. the light on the right is superb giving lovely warm colours in an otherwise cold looking scene. the hints of blue sky coming through the clouds are also superb.
hand held at 1/20 you did very well keeping the sharpness so good, i wouldn't be able to keep my hand still with shivering in that cold; although maybe you were frozen solid.
i crashed my very first car in donegal after a day at glenveagh castle. then spent the evening in milford gardai station waiting for my friends to find 100 irish punts to pay the fine before the guards would let me out. but apart form the crash, the incarceration, the financial consequences, and the embarrassment, it was a pretty good weekend!

Wonderful composition, beautiful atmosphere, lovely light and color tones, excellent POV and DOF, very nice framework, TfS!

incredible landscape. It could be both an illustration for a horror movie or for a romance.
I like the foreground with the frosted vegetation. It usually melts away very quickly in Ireland so you can indeed observe it usually only early in the morning.
I am just wondering what you did in such a remote place so early in the winter time. Was it a jet lag?
In any case: the early bird catches the worm.
I am sure you would prefer not to have the slight burnout in the upper right side but I see the light was very challenging creating strong contrasts. And it does enhance the incredible atmosphere here.
You have mentioned the castle further in the distance so I will give here the link to my photo showing the castle set against the same lake photographed from above (click here).

Ma très chère Lisa-san,
I can almost see you looking far across the water and further out into the distant valley. It is a very pleasant image. I do not like to analyse images like this. But I see that the mountains across the water and where you stand seem to belong to different lands. This is your spiritual birthplace? I like how the foreground diagonally cuts across the scene. It is very inspiring to meet with an image like this. I could go ahead analysing the image, but I would rather not. I decided to sit in front of my monitor and enjoy the beautifully framed view with a bowl of coffee. I really like the photo.
With my very best and warm regards,
Have a very nice evening. Lisa

This lake shows us beautiful silver tones. A light difficult to manage but well controlled. I like the lighting difference between the left and the right of the photo.

un paysage un peu plus accueillant que ma dernière photo et pourtant ils ont des similitudes. Un joli ciel avec des lumières en contre jour bien distribuées.
Bon contraste entre soleil et givre à l'avant plan.

Zdravo draga Lisa
I long to photograph some of the national parks, but far, there's not in my area and I do not travel much.
I really like the theme and composition
Fin work with excellent text and fine photography.
Quality as always excellent.

Very beautiful mountain lake. A mysterious atmosphere and a little bit cold as I see on the grass.
Have a nice day.

a wonderful shot of one of the places that I long to visit. Love the mellow tranquility and softness of the light. love the fg detailing and the dusting of frost. A beautiful image and presentation.
Have a good day - Brian.

Brass balls indeed, been there donethat...
Good positioning to encompass the sweep and distant lake mountains. Now you need Santa to deliver a new HDR Nikon camera, to adjust the extreme in contrast.
Must be a weebit warmer in Oz now?

Hai reso benissimo l'atmosfera di quei luoghi selvaggi.

Beautiful landscape and good effect with also the fg and the ice on the grass, light is well managed, tfs.

Glenveagh is really a wonderful place, I enjoyed my walk there. I was very lucky because the weather was sunny and cool that day. It looks like it was very cold the day you were there ! Nice POV anyway, a typical one from this beautiful valley. The left part is a little dark, but the light on the right side of the photo is very nice.

Ciao Cara Lisa,
A photo from three years ago, highly evocative of the lochs in Scotland. The contrasting light on the two sides is quite dramatic. Including the shrubbery in the foreground creates excellent depth-of-field. Have a good weekend, Lisa,
skippy007 (12510) 2011-12-11 23:09
Ciao Cara, I have no idea what the title here means unless it has something to do with freezing the b----s on a brass monkey ;). It reminds me of the lakes I saw in Italy except for the winter look & feel, certainly an atmosphere that is different but just as beautiful. Difficult light you say? Splendid result, colour, exposure & details are excellent.
Kielia (23287) 2011-12-13 8:11
you have captured a wonderful atmosphere of this fascinating place. The light – despite the difficulties you are describing - is really fantastic and the moody colors are very attractive. The composition is outstanding. My compliments!
